Some point to all these attempts as proof of Fidel Castro’s being chosen by destiny and/or see the CIA outlandish plans as the agency beclowning itself but the more conspiratorial minded say that the agency and its backers never really intended to kill the man and preferred to have this relatively small threat on hand to wrangle more funding and support from congress.

Two weeks after his fall Cuba stopped using the dollar as currency, it had done so since an economic crisis in 1993, reintroducing its own Peso for local transactions and instituting a 10% exchange fee for dollars entering the country in an attempt to bolster reserves of dollars in the face of Bush Administration attempts to ratchet up economic pressure on the island nation. A similar scenario, albeit on a far more massive scale, played out in 2022 when the US and its allies imposed sanctions on Russia.
