Greatest City In The World - Las Vegas Pt 4… Solar & Mining Capital

Las Vegas is the Greatest City in the World, long known for gambling and entertainment, limited diversity in business… however it has evolved to include a strong share of Solar & Mining industries.

1st, NV has the largest SOLAR ECONOMY in the COUNTRY, with more solar jobs per capita of any state. Currently, there are over 20 large scale solar energy facilities that convert sunlight into an electric current for conventional electricity-producing processes found in traditional power plants in NV. Las Vegas ranked no. 2 in the U.S. for installed solar photovoltaic or PV capacity per capita. Many of these workers are working in the deserts surrounding Las Vegas.

We have some of the largest plants being built around Vegas. That includes the $1.2 Billion Gemini project. Gemini is located 30 minutes outside of Las Vegas and with its 1.8MM solar panels, will power about 10% of Nevada’s peak power demand. The 690-megawatt solar plant is being built on roughly 7,000 acres, making it the nation’s biggest. Gemini is now operational and generates enough electricity to power 260,000 homes.

2nd, Known as the Silver State, NV has been a leader in the US and the world for mining gold, silver, copper…and now playing a major role in Lithium. These minerals have all become critical with current technology.

Currently, the only operating lithium mine in the U.S. is Albemarle’s Silver Peak in Nevada. It produces about 1% of the world’s lithium. The company estimates it will generate up to $25MM in taxes for state and local governments during its two years of construction, and up to $31MM annually in tax revenue once operational for local and state governments.

Barrick Gold with subsidiary Nevada Gold Mines is among the top 5 mining companies in the world. The Global Investment attractiveness index has Nevada just behind Western Australia and Finland. A massive open pit mine near Las Vegas, owned by Las Vegas based firm MP Materials, considered the world’s 2nd largest producer of rare earth minerals. The company's vision has joined a national conversation on restoring rare earth production in the US.

For more than 150 years, NV mining has produced minerals that are key to an innovative and advanced society. Today, more than 20 minerals are mined in the Silver State which are found in thousands of items we use every day. The state is an international leader in gold production in addition to producing large quantities of silver, copper, diatomite, and gypsum.

Bottom line: In NV, almost $400MM annual taxes are paid from mining, including $80MM to the State Education Fund. Mines have career opportunities for people of all education levels. In addition to mining-specific roles, operators also need the same positions as other industries, including HR professionals, administrative employees, lawyers, and more. The Mining industry economic impact for NV is almost $14 Billion per year, around 36K employees, $3 Billion in salaries and wages.
