Bodycam shows Baltimore Police fire 19 shots at armed man who fled from traffic collision

Body camera footage was released by Baltimore Police from a fatal officer-involved shooting on Oct. 9.

The shooting took place in the 1600 block of Argyle Ave. leaving 54-year-old Robert Need Jr. dead.

Sergeant Thomas Gross observed a vehicle hit a parked vehicle. Gross exited his vehicle and approached the driver, who was later identified as Need.

The officer asked Need if he was okay and told him to sit down on the curb. Moments later, Need took off running from the scene.

Gross chased him while continually yelling for him to put his hands up. Other officers helped respond and found Need located in a ditch.

In the video, officers see Need holding a gun, causing the officers to fire their weapons.

Three officers fired, Sergeant Thomas Gross, a 10-year veteran; Officer Tyler Douglas, a 2-year veteran; and Officer James Klein, III, a 1-year veteran. Body camera footage was shown from one officer, Ofc. Strickland, who did not fire his gun.

Nineteen shots were fired by police. It is unknown how many times Need was struck.

Police do not believe Need fired his weapon, but it was loaded with 15 rounds.

According to police, Need was prohibited from possessing a firearm.
