A great recipe for seafood lovers. Let's begin by scaling and washing the herring thoroughly. Cut off the heads and fins, then season the fish with salt, pepper, and cloves. Neatly pack the seasoned herring in a large jar, ensuring they're well arranged. Pour enough cold vinegar over the fish to cover them completely. Place a plate over the top of the jar and set it in a moderately warm oven, or on top of a stove in a pan of hot water, for five to six hours. This process will allow the flavors to meld beautifully.

Once done, the herring relish will keep in a cool place for several weeks, making it a perfect go-to relish. For best results, use stoneware or fire-proof yellow ware jars or pans. This herring relish not only adds a delightful tangy flavor to your meals but also serves as an excellent preserved condiment.
