Hurricane Milton Survival Wisdom (from a Warrior Katrina Survivor my dear Aunti Lone White Eagle)

For those who are unable to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Milton, please take these precautions to ensure your safety:

1. Use a black permanent marker to write your full name, Social Security number, and the contact information of someone outside the hurricane zone on your chest. We did this on our arms and legs during Katrina, in case we were taken by alligators, snakes, sharks, or drowned.

2. Wear life vests, and make sure your pets have vests as well. Attach a flashlight and a whistle to your vest. If you end up in water, turn the flashlight on, and use the whistle to signal for help.

3. Pack essentials in ziplock bags:
- Underwear, socks, a shirt, and pants in individual gallon-sized bags.
- Important papers, toiletries, medicines, Lysol spray, and cash.
- Flatten toilet paper rolls to fit in bags.
- Put cell phones and chargers in quart-sized bags to keep them dry.
- Pack a portable radio, crackers, and pop-top canned food in zip bags.

4. Prepare for water survival:
- Only half-fill black garbage bags with clothes, shoes, and other essentials. Leave air in them by tying a knot at the top.
- Tie two bags together and use them as flotation devices, like makeshift water wings, by placing them under your arms across your chest.

5. Wear protective gear:
- Have a football or motorcycle helmet on hand to protect yourself from flying debris.

6. If you’re staying in your home, set up your attic with:
- A case of water, pop-top canned food, spoons, gallon buckets, and waterproof bags (for bathroom use).
- Toilet paper, an ax, a hatchet, or a couple of short-handled hatchets (to break through the roof if water levels rise).

May God’s grace keep you and your loved ones safe.

🦅

Wačháŋtognaka yo, waŋkátuya táku kiŋ uŋyáŋpi kte.

This translates to: "May blessings surround you, and may you be protected from all directions."

Stay safe during the storm!
