According to the official logline, “‘The Six Triple Eight’ is inspired by the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to serve overseas in WWII. Given an extraordinary mission and united in their determination, these unsung heroes delivered hope and shattered barriers.”

Washington plays Major Charity Adams, who, in the trailer, commands a battalion of women soldiers and gives them some stern words of encouragement before starting their training. “I am giving you my best, and you will give me yours. With several Emmy and Golden Globe Award nominations under her belt, Kerry Washington is no stranger to delivering a goosebump-inducing performance. The Scandal and Little Fires Everywhere alum has long been known to hit audiences in the gut (in a good way) and pull on their heartstrings. But it’s with the latest trailer for her upcoming production, The Six Triple Eight, that Washington shows she’s at it again. Helmed and penned by Tyler Perry, the production centers around the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color who put their lives at risk for the well-being of the nation while serving overseas during World War II. Set for a limited theatrical release on December 6 followed by a Netflix drop on December 20, the teaser promises a moving story is on the way to a cinema or living room near you.

Boldly stepping up to address her team with a message of hope, Washington’s Major Charity Adams speaks to the members of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion on a loading dock next to a giant ship. The brave women are being tasked with the mission of going overseas to aid in the efforts during WWII and are preparing to have every ounce of themselves tested and pushed to the limit. The efforts in question include somewhere around 17 million pieces of mail that need to be delivered to soldiers or their loved ones back home who have been sick with worry after not hearing back from the front lines. Facing down racism and sexism, the women will balk at nothing to ensure that their very important job is completed.

Joining Washington to fill out the ensemble cast of The Six Triple Eight is a lineup that includes Ebony Obsidian (Tyler Perry’s Sistas), Milauna Jackson (A Jazzman’s Blues), Kylie Jefferson (Tiny Pretty Things), Shanice Shantay (The Wiz Live!), Sarah Jeffery (Charmed), Pepi Sonuga (Queens), Moriah Brown (Safe Word), Jeanté Godlock (Daybreak), Susan Sarandon (The Rocky Horror Picture Show), Dean Norris (Breaking Bad), Donna Biscoe (The Visitors), Jay Reeves (All American), Scott Daniel Johnson (A Man in Full), Sam Waterston (Grace and Frankie) and Oprah Winfrey.

Filmmaker Tyler Perry made his name on “Trapped In The Closet” and all his silly, pratfall-y “Madea” films and carved out massive success for himself. The latest is “The Six Triple Eight,” a WWII drama starring Kerry Washington, coming to Netflix in December.

“To honor the long ignored worth of the 6888 has been the greatest privilege of my career thus far,” Perry captioned his photo, which shows the filmmaker standing on set amid his lead ensemble and a massive troupe of background actors representing the 855 women who served in the battalion.

Popular on Variety

Washington, who serves as an executive producer on the film, also shared a couple of behind-the-scenes images from the set, using her post to explain the remarkable way she came aboard the project.

“God as my witness, last year I posted a #BlackHERstory picture of me dressed as Lena Derricott — a young woman who served in the 6888 battalion, the only all Black all female battalion to serve overseas in WWII,” Washington wrote on Instagram. “At the time, unbeknownst to me, sitting in my email inbox was some information Tyler Perry had sent me about a movie he was hoping to make about these phenomenal women!”

It was a case of good fortune, or maybe fate. Soon after, Washington explained, she met with Perry and they “marveled at the coincidence.” Washington then read the script and signed on to play the role of Captain Charity Adams, the commander of the 6888 battalion.

“Tyler has gathered a cadre of extraordinarily talented young actresses to play the army recruits,” Washington wrote of being asked to play the leader, who was later elevated to the rank of major. “It is the honor and privilege of a lifetime to step into these women’s shoes. They are the epitome of strength, perseverance, resilience and #BlackHERstory. I can’t wait for you to see them in action!”

The film also stars Oprah Winfrey, Sam Waterston and Susan Sarandon, though none are pictured in these first-look photos.

Perry wrote the screenplay based on an article by Kevin M. Hymel, published in WWII History Magazine by Sovereign Media, which helped bring the story of 6888th Postal Directory Battalion to more prominent attention.

Perry teased the project in an August 2022 interview with Variety, saying that his next movie would be set during World War II and feature “some incredible people that were overlooked for years.” Netflix officially announced the movie in December. Production on the film began last month.

“Six Triple Eight” marks Tyler Perry’s fourth film directed for Netflix, following “A Fall From Grace,” “A Madea Homecoming” and “A Jazzman’s Blues.” The project is produced by Perry; Nicole Avant for Her Excellency Productions; Keri Selig for Intuition Productions; Carlota Espinosa; Angi Bones and Tony Strickland for Tyler Perry Studios. Mandalay Pictures’ Peter Guber executive produces the project alongside Washington.

Netflix has shared a new The Six Triple Eight teaser trailer, previewing the upcoming WWII drama from Tyler Perry starring Kerry Washington.

What happens in The Six Triple Eight teaser trailer?
The new teaser trailer shows off more of the upcoming film, which follows the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to serve overseas in WWII. The trailer shows off not only the hardships the group will have to face as soldiers in World War II but also what they’ll have to overcome to provide hope for those in battle.

The Six Triple Eight stars Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams, who was the commanding officer of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only Women’s Army Corp unit of color to be stationed overseas during World War II. In 2022, U.S. President Joe Biden awarded the Congressional Gold Medal to the brave women of the 6888th Battalion. The film will be available for streaming later this year.

Washington will be joined by an all-star ensemble cast that includes Oprah Winfrey, Susan Sarandon, Sam Waterston, Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Shanice Shantay, Sarah Jeffery, Pepi Sonuga, Moriah Brown, Jeanté Godlock, Jay Reeves, Jeffery Johnson, Baadja-Lyne Odums, Donna Biscoe, Gregg Sulkin, Scott Daniel Johnson, and Dean Norris.

“The film tells the inspiring true story of the incredible and brave women of the only all-black, all-female World War II Battalion,” reads the synopsis. “These 855 women joined the war effort with little knowledge of what exactly they would be doing, but were quickly given the mission of a lifetime: sort through and fix the three-year backlog of undelivered mail. A herculean task, that most thought to be impossible, the women not only succeeded but did it in half the time they were given. Facing discrimination, unfamiliar land, and a war-torn country, they persevered and sorted over 17 million pieces of mail, reconnecting American soldiers with their families and loved ones back home. The motto that kept them going each day was one they created themselves: ‘No Mail, Low Morale.’ The women of the 6888 weren’t just delivering mail, they were delivering hope.”

The Six Triple Eight is written and directed by Tyler Perry, based on Kevin M. Hymel’s 2019 article published in WWII History Magazine.
