"This is as real as anything I know..." Is it? Or is she just saying that? RLJE Films has revealed an official trailer for an indie action sci-fi thriller called Levels, the feature debut of Canadian indie filmmaker Adam Stern. This is set to open in November including on VOD right away. The vague one-liner: After witnessing his girlfriend's murder, a man risks everything, including reality itself, to discover the truth. In the future, a man watches in horror as his girlfriend gets murdered and the killer seemingly disappears into mid-air. He soon embarks on a voyage of discovery that leads to shocking revelations that his own reality is not what it appears to be. The indie sci-fi film stars Cara Gee, Peter Mooney, Aaron Abrams, and David Hewlett. From this trailer, it seems like he's stuck in some kind of massive video game simulation - "the first digital universe". Hence the different "levels" of the world he has to navigate in order to figure out what happened to her and what's really going on. Not bad, seems like a cool idea, I'm curious. Check out this footage below.
Here's the main official trailer (+ poster) for Adam Stern's sci-fi film Levels, direct from YouTube:

Snapping awake from a nightmare, Joe (Mooney) takes a breath before returning to his supposed reality. On the surface, it seems like an average day in an average man's life, but after his girlfriend, Ash (Gee), can be heard delivering Joe a cautionary message, things flip upside down. Ash is shot by an unknown assailant who makes a break for it. When Joe chases after the perp, her attacker vanishes into thin air. On a mission to find out the truth, Joe bites off more than he can chew, as he comes to find that everything he thought he knew about his world may very well have been a lie. Levels is written and directed by Canadian genre producer / filmmaker Adam Stern, making his feature directorial debut after directing a few other shorts previously; he also founded Artifex Studios in Canada. Produced by Kyle Bornais, Tony Wosk, and Adam Stern. This hasn't premiered at any festivals or elsewhere, as far as we know. RLJE Films will debut Stern's Levels in select US theaters + on VOD starting November 1st, 2024 this fall. Is anyone interested?

Reality is breaking in Collider’s exclusive first look at the official trailer for Levels, the latest mind-bending sci-fi thriller to come from RLJE Films. Along with the teaser, we’ve also got a debut poster for intrigued parties to check out before the film arrives in just a few short weeks on November 1. Starring Camelot and Rookie Blue’s Peter Mooney and Strange Empire and The Expanse’s Cara Gee, the feature-length directorial debut from visual effects aficionado, Adam Stern (Continuum), promises to keep audiences on their toes right along with the main character as he struggles to separate reality from fiction.
Snapping awake from a nightmare, Joe (Mooney) takes a second before coming back down to his supposed reality. On the surface, it seems like an average day in an average man’s life, but after his girlfriend, Ash (Gee), can be heard delivering Joe a cautionary message, the trailer flips things upside down. Viewers watch as Ash is shot by an unknown assailant who makes a break for it. But, when Joe chases after the perp, the attacker vanishes into thin air. On a mission to find out the truth, Joe bites off much more than he can chew, as he comes to find that everything he thought he knew about his world may very well have been a lie.
While the trailer largely leans into Joe’s journey in Levels, the poster showcases Gee’s Ash. Standing tough while the very fabric of reality implodes around her, Ash is prepared for the worst, gripping a large gun in her hands.
RLJE Films’ Background in Inventive and Thought-Provoking Films
For years now, RLJE Films has brought audiences incredible stories from just about every genre under the sun. Earlier this year, viewers were invited to step into the post-apocalyptic world of Arcadian alongside a killer trio of actors including Nicolas Cage (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent), Jaeden Martell (Mr. Harrigan’s Phone) and Maxwell Jenkins (Joe Bell), while Claudio Fäh’s survivor thriller, No Way Up, gave us even more of a reason to fear the open water. Last year, the studio put out one hit thriller after the next, including the holiday-themed slasher, It’s a Wonderful Knife, the Lovecraftian Suitable Flesh, and another Cage-led production, Sympathy for the Devil.
With such a solid track record, audiences won’t want to miss out on the impending arrival of the studio’s latest sci-fi thriller, Levels. Check out the exclusive trailer release above and the first-look poster below. Stay tuned to Collider for more information about how to check out the movie when it arrives on November 1.

AMP International has come aboard for sales and has pre-sold the film in multiple territories including Germany (Capelight) and Middle East (Front Row).
Levels is the first foray for Orbital Mechanics, the new production company from Stern who directs from his original script and produced by himself, Tony Wosk (The Swearing Jar) and Kyle Bornais (Sorry for Your Loss).
Financial partners include Media Capital Group and Manitoba Film & Music. The film has also received an Epic MegaGrant from Epic Games for use of its Unreal Engine technology, which the production has utilized in previsualization and will continue to implement in planned post-production work.
Cast also includes Jade Ma (Black Widow) and Adam Hurtig (The Perfect Match). Cinematography is by Rion Gonzales (Circuit Breakers), editing by Jamie Alain (Snowpiercer) with production design by Bruce Cook (The Grudge), costumes by Sandra Soke (How it Ends) and music composed by Adam Stern.
Executive producers are James Norrie, Nina Kolokouri, Ross Mrazek, Ben Rappaport and Angelo Paletta.
Stern said: “Levels is the kind of story I’ve always wanted to tell; a science fiction thriller with big ideas and even bigger scale that always retains grounded characters, even as the action and suspense gather pace. I’ve spent countless hours contemplating how little we understand about the world around us… and after watching this film, I hope audiences might question the nature of their reality. I’m beyond excited to work with this stellar cast and team to bring this story to life.”
Added Producer Tony Wosk: “After viewing Adam’s short films it was apparent he was more than ready to make this feature. The screenplay for Levels immediately jumps off the page as a sci-fi thriller that will engage audiences. The cast Adam has attached is amazing and it’s been fun to watch their collective enthusiasm grow as we begin filming.”
Cara Gee is represented by GGA and Untitled and Peter Mooney by GGA and A3 Artists. David Hewlett and Aaron Abrams are represented by The Characters Talent Agency.
Cara Gee (The Expanse) and Mpho Koaho (Falling Skies, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency) are set to star in the forthcoming sci-fi thriller Levels written and directed by Adam Stern. Principal photography is slated to begin in 2021.
The film, which marks Stern’s feature directorial debut, explores “the nature of our existence.” After witnessing the murder of his girlfriend (Gee), Joe (Koaho) risks everything — including reality itself — to discover the truth about her death. Additional casting is underway.
Levels comes from Orbital Mechanics and Middle Child Films and will be produced by Stern and Tony Wosk (Sorry For Your Loss, Nose to Tail) of Middle Child.
“Adam shows a unique talent for storytelling within the genre, including strong character work with his actors, compelling visuals and the ability to produce visual effects-heavy content on a fraction of the cost of studio tentpole movies,” said Wosk. “Levels is structured as the perfect feature debut for this talented filmmaker.”

The casting bolsters representation in front of the camera as Koaho is of South African descent and Gee is one of the few First Nations actresses in Canada and in the film and TV industry. This brings more Indigenous and Native American representation into the spotlight.

“I’m insanely excited to work with Mpho and Cara on Levels,” said Stern. “I’m a big fan of Mpho’s from both Dirk Gently and Falling Skies – he has a unique take on Joe and brings so much to the table. Cara’s phenomenal work as Drummer on The Expanse consistently blows me away, a combination of elegance and ferocity that’s perfect for Aislinn. I can’t wait to see them breathe life into these roles.”
Stern is known for his award-winning shorts including the viral FTL, which has surpassed 20 million views online and is currently one of the top films on Gunpowder & Sky’s sci-fi platform Dust. Stern is also an award-winning and Emmy-nominated VFX supervisor and artist who has worked on various projects at Apple TV+, Netflix, Disney, Nickelodeon and Syfy. He also worked on Falling Skies which starred Koaho.
In addition to development support from Bell Media’s Harold Greenberg Fund and Creative BC, Levels has recently been awarded an Epic MegaGrant, giving the project support for its planned use of virtual production techniques. Unreal Engine will be a key technological component for the film, from prep through post-production.
Gee is repped by Kishwar Iqbal of GGA in Toronto. Koaho is represented by The Characters Talent Agency, Buchwald and Wright Entertainment.
