Natalie Davis Explains Preferential Voting in Queensland State Election - 20 October 2024

Natalie Davis moderated the recent Scenic Rim Candidates Forum at Harvest Point Church.

In this video, Natalie thoroughly explains how the preferential voting system works in Queensland and how alternative, values-based parties can be elected if voters thoughtfully allocate their preferences.

In my opinion (and to add to Natalie's presentation), a wasted vote is where you vote "1" for LNP or ALP. If you vote this way, your 2,3,4,5,6 votes are worthless and do nothing to help the smaller parties that more closely align with your values.

It is better to vote "1" and "2" the smaller parties that more closely align with your values and then vote "3" or "4" your preferred 'major' party. By voting this way, you will:

a) give your preferred smaller parties a chance to get elected;
b) help your preferred smaller parties receive funding for receiving a "1" vote;
c) send a message to your preferred major party (i.e. LNP or ALP) that they need to better represent your values if they want to receive your "1" vote.

If you vote this way, you need not be concerned about wasting your vote. Your preferred major party is still in line to get your vote, if the other parties you voted for first do not get enough votes.
