How America's Election System REALLY Works
Discover how the U.S. election process works and why every vote matters!
The U.S. election process is a unique system that involves federal, state, and local procedures to choose leaders. Here's how it works.
Citizens vote at polling stations or by mail. Every four years, they vote for president, but there are also elections for Congress, state, and local officials. The presidential election uses the Electoral College system, where electors in each state ultimately decide the winner.
Each state is assigned electors based on its number of congressional representatives. Larger states like California have more electors, while smaller states like Wyoming have fewer. Most states give all their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the popular vote in that state. To win the presidency, a candidate needs at least 270 of the 538 total electoral votes.
Beyond the presidency, voters also elect members of Congress. The House of Representatives has 435 members, elected every two years. The Senate has 100 members, with staggered elections every six years. These elections often happen alongside presidential elections, but they also occur during midterm years.
Before the general election, primaries are held. Primary elections help political parties choose their candidates for the general election. States hold their primaries at different times, and voters pick who they want to represent their party. The winners of these primaries then move on to the general election, where they compete against other parties' candidates.
In addition to national races, local elections matter too. Citizens vote for governors, mayors, judges, and other officials who directly impact their communities. Election Day, held in November, is a key moment when citizens have the chance to influence the future direction of their government at all levels.
This system ensures that every vote counts, shaping not only the president but also the representatives who make important decisions for the country.
