Haiti is one of the world's poorest countries and has seen an upsurge in killings, rapes and kidnappings since the 2021 assasination of President Jovenel Moïse.
Violent gangs control large areas of the capital Port-au-Prince, terrorizing civilians. The UN says more than 3,600 people have been killed in gang violence this year alone.
In 2023, the UN mandated an international security support mission, led by the Kenyan police. 2,500 police officers were expected, but only 400 Kenyans arrived three months ago.
