Tales from the Tombstones

There is a graveyard in the wood,
Despite the years, it's still withstood.
On the trees chirp the birds,
Stones below hold man's last words.

From a clockmaker’s stone,
I’ve never heard from,
He quietly said,
"My time has come."

A chemist lies,
In another direction,
His last words were,
"That was the wrong reaction."

A lawyer’s tomb,
Between trees enclosed,
His last words,
"The case is closed."

An anonymous grave,
I clean moss quick,
then i can read:
"Told you I was sick."

Beside it lies,
An owner of a store,
Who simply said,
"I can’t be bothered anymore."

A captain’s tomb,
Stands grand and high,
His last words were,
"An iceberg’s close by."

A generals grave,
old quite a bit:
"From over there,
they cannot hit."

A diver rests,
it there remarks,
"This water is not
deep enough for sharks."

A stubborn guy,
who liked to disagree:
"What're gonna do?
Gonna stab me?"

In great letters,
on a comedians tomb,
"I'm tired being,
the funiest guy in the room."

A tragic drunkyard,
Who drank too deep,
His final plea,
"Just one more before I sleep."

Over there,
the tomb of a clown,
says "if I'm lying,
may God strike me down."

A good samaritan,
his loving family,
immortalized the words:
"I wonder why he shot me."

A young man's stone,
So full of cheer,
His reckless words:
"Someone hold my beer."

An experimenters grave,
I'm staring at.
it simply reads: "No,
why did I do that."

An officer,
lies here to rest.
"Hurry, please.
Bring me a bulletproof vest."

The final tomb,
to which I go,
Bears just one word:
The simple "No."

Life can be short,
Life can be long,
But sometimes in words,
Mementos live on.
