The idea of a greater civilization or being uplifting a lesser being has long been a story told by humanity. From the Tree of Knowledge to Gilgamesh and Enkidu to Prometheus and fire, the notion that gods made humans and gave them knowledge is well explored.
In the First Lensman and the Lensman series, EE "Doc" Smith had the Arisians, and their evil enemy, uplift both humans and other extraterrestrial races to fight their proxy war through the use of lenses. Was Smith borrowing a common trope in mythology?
