Yahya Sinwar was a leader of Hamas, a group active in Gaza. He took charge after other leaders, Ismail Haniyeh and Mohammed Deif, died earlier this year.

After suffering torture and spending 22 years in prison, he finally tasted freedom in 2011 as part of the Shalit prisoner exchange deal.

In 2017, Sinwar was chosen as the leader of Hamas in Gaza, and he was re-elected in 2021, further strengthening his role as both a political and military leader.

He was known for leading Hamas's actions in response to Israel's attacks on Gaza and was also involved in negotiating ceasefires.

Israel has been trying to target Sinwar, accusing him of planning an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in over 1,100 deaths and about 250 people being taken captive. Over the past year, Israeli forces have heavily damaged Gaza, killing over 42,000 people and destroying much of its infrastructure.

On Thursday, news began to spread that 62-year-old Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was killed while fighting a group of Israeli trainee soldiers who encountered him by chance. Sinwar's death in combat has added a final chapter to his life as both a fighter and leader, deeply involved with Hamas since its founding.

Hamas has confirmed that their leader, Yahya Sinwar, was killed while wearing a combat vest during fighting with Israeli forces in Gaza. They stated that he died defending Palestine until his final moments.
His death marked the final chapter of his resistance against a strong occupation.
