As a young believer have you ever met or seen another believer who stood out among the rest? As if their entire person was full of a heavenly light that shone. Where you were instantly made aware they were so different and had something you wanted they had spiritually.
Your observation of their life and committment to Jesus Christ was rare and you were powerfully drawn to them and had to get to know them. I believe this is what happened to Paul the apostle.
I think the day Paul was consenting to Stephen's death, and seeing and hearing his final prayer, he carried that scene, those words, and power of His love and faith until the end. And after his conversion, the memory of that day never left his pierced heart but only deepened through the years until his being "Paul the aged."
So when it was time for him to die he also carried the final heart-melting words of Stephen's into his own last and final prayer verbatim. I believe Paul meant every word from his tender heart. But perhaps more as a final benediction and memorial of loving remembrance of Stephen in honor of him.
I pray our last and final prayers will be full of loving, forgiving and joyful words in our outgoing breath as a final stamp of service to Jesus Christ, and all those around us.
"There are times when nothing holds the heart but a long, long look at Calvary. How very small anything that we are allowed to endure seems beside that Cross." -Amy Carmichael
