In 1953, Harry Martindale, a young apprentice plumber, experienced one of the most famous paranormal encounters in British history while working in the cellar of the Treasurer’s House in York. As he was installing heating pipes, he heard the sound of a distant horn and, to his shock, saw Roman soldiers emerge from a wall and march through the cellar. The soldiers appeared worn and battle-ready, walking knee-deep through the floor as if the original Roman road was buried beneath.

Harry Martindale's encounter in the cellar of the Treasurer’s House remains one of the most fascinating and credible accounts of a ghostly encounter with historical significance.
