"People die if the Law is not upheld." Netflix has revealed the official trailer for the sequel to the hit Spanish lo-fi sci-fi film The Platform from 2019 (it landed on Netflix in 2020) called simply The Platform 2. The first film is one of the best capitalism-is-terrible films of modern times. This continuation is again directed by the same Spanish filmmaker Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia who made the original film (he has been making this in secret for years). As a mysterious leader imposes their rule in the Platform, another resident becomes embroiled in the battle against this controversial method to help fight the brutal feeding system. But when eating from the wrong plate becomes a death sentence, how far would you be willing to go to save your life? Milena Smit and Hovik Keuchkerian star in the second installment of the dystopian sci-fi horror movie, with Óscar Jaenada, Natalia Tena, Bastien Ughetto, and Tadashi Ito. This premieres soon at the San Sebastian Film Festival and Beyond Fest before it's streaming on Netflix in early October. Damn this looks gnarly! Much more intense and stylish and grosser than the first film. Seems like another must catch sequel.

Here's the main official trailer (+ poster) for Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia's The Platform 2, from YouTube:

The Platform 2 (Spanish: El hoyo 2, lit. 'The Hole 2') is a 2024 Spanish science fiction horror film directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia. A prequel to The Platform (2019), it stars Milena Smit and Hovik Keuchkerian. It was released on October 4, 2024.[1]

Plot
The Vertical Self-Management Center is a dystopian prison with a unique structure: 333 floors with a hole in the center. Each day, a platform loaded with food descends through this hole, stopping at each level for two minutes. Prisoners on higher floors have first access to the food, while those on lower levels risk starvation. At the end of each month, prisoners are randomly reassigned to new floors. Before entering, each inmate is interviewed and allowed to bring one personal item.

The story primarily follows two new inmates: Zamiatin, who requests pizza as his daily meal, and Perempuan, who chooses ham croquettes. They're initially placed on level 24, where they encounter the prison's social dynamics. Two factions exist among the prisoners: Loyalists, who follow self-imposed rules about eating only their chosen food or trading voluntarily, and Barbarians, who eat whatever they can grab. Robespierre, a Loyalist from level 23, introduces them to this system, arguing it ensures fairer food distribution.

Tensions quickly escalate when prisoners from higher levels eat food meant for others. A violent conflict erupts, resulting in deaths and injuries. Perempuan and Robespierre fight to defend their level and maintain order. During this chaos, they learn about "The Master" or "The Messiah," a mythical figure who allegedly survived a month without food through meditation, then sacrificed his own leg to feed others on the lowest levels. His followers, known as the Anointed Ones, spread his message of solidarity.

As days pass, Zamiatin and Perempuan grow closer, sharing food and personal stories. Zamiatin reveals his background as a disillusioned mathematician, while Perempuan hints at a tragic past involving her ex-partner's child. Their budding relationship is cut short when they're reassigned to level 180, where no food reaches them. Zamiatin, already ill, sacrifices himself to protect Perempuan from punishment for harboring him.

The next month, Perempuan is paired with Sahabat on level 51. Sahabat, missing an arm, shares her harrowing experiences with the Anointed Ones, particularly a brutal leader named Dagin Babi. They learn that Dagin is systematically killing Barbarians throughout the prison. Perempuan joins a group to confront him, resulting in a violent encounter that leaves her traumatized and missing an arm.

Goya's painting The Dog is used as a plot device.[2]
Sahabat reveals a potential escape plan: fake death by consuming a toxic substance, hoping to be disposed of outside the facility. She believes an oil painting brought by a prisoner could serve this purpose. This information becomes crucial for Perempuan's subsequent actions.

In the following month, Perempuan wakes up on level 72 with a new cellmate, Trimagasi, whose personal item is a knife. Disillusioned with the Loyalist ideals, Perempuan recruits a group of Barbarians, ostensibly to challenge the Loyalists but secretly to help her find the painting she needs for escape.

A massive battle ensues between the Loyalists, led by Dagin Babi, and Perempuan's group of Barbarians. The fight is brutal and bloody, leaving almost everyone dead. Only Perempuan and Trimagasi survive. Perempuan decides to attempt the escape plan, eating her oil painting and passing out.

She wakes up among corpses being disposed of, realizing she's reached level 333. Here, Perempuan makes a shocking discovery: the facility keeps children as tools to manipulate prisoners, using them as false symbols of hope or to prevent escape attempts. She tries to save a boy but fails due to the strange gravity in this level.

The story concludes with Perempuan at the bottom level of the prison. She witnesses more prisoners arriving with children, revealing the cyclical and manipulative nature of the prison system. In a surprising twist, she reunites with her fiancé Goreng, who arrives carrying a girl.

The original film was released on Netflix in March 2020. Subsequently, the film received a surge in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic and the company revealed the film had been watched by 56 million households over its first four weeks of release, among the most-ever for one of their original films.[6]

Discussions of a sequel emerged shortly after the film's success in 2020. In May 2023, Netflix reported the beginning of filming of the follow-up with Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia returning as director and starring Hovik Keuchkerian and Milena Smit.[7]

Shooting locations included the BEC in Barakaldo.[8]

Release
The film was selected for screening in the 'Culinary Zinema' section of the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival.[9] It was released on Netflix on October 4, 2024.[1]

Reception
Critical response
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 47% of 15 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.8/10.[10] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 46 out of 100, based on 6 critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews.[11]

In his review for The Guardian, Jesse Hassenger noted that while the film's "Grindhouse thought experiments" are engaging and suggest a stronger interest in speculative fiction than a singular thematic message, it ultimately falls short. He critiqued the film for moving too quickly and carelessly to develop its characters, stating that although Perempuan emerges as the lead and Smit performs well, the story lacks stability, constantly shifting beneath her. Hassenger gave the film two out of five stars.[12]

Robert Daniels of RogerEbert.com delivered a scathing review of The Platform 2, criticizing the film for offering little beyond repeating the original. He argued that the movie quickly falls into rehashing the same "premonitions and metaphors" from its predecessor, even bringing back a character from the first film without adding anything new. Daniels went on to suggest that it might have been better if The Platform 2 had never been released, ultimately giving the film a rating of one and a half stars out of five.[13]

David Ehrlich of IndieWire gave the film a 'C+' rating, writing that while there is enough "squelchy awfulness on display to keep horror fans engaged until the third act", the "film grows bored with the limits and implications of its own metaphor".[14]

In the meantime, as part of their Geek Week festivities, Netflix has served up a piping hot trailer to give audiences more of an idea what to expect from the follow-up film. Starring Milena Smit (The Snow Girl), Hovik Keuchkerian (Money Heist), Natalia Tena (Game of Thrones), and Óscar Jaenada (Luis Miguel: The Series), the Spanish-language feature promises more twists, turns, and bottomless hunger.

In The Platform 2, audiences will return to the hopeless vertical prison where they’ll watch cellmates team up for survival. The system appears to be the same, a platform transports food between floors with those housed at the top receiving the most and those on the bottom the least or - oftentimes - nothing by the time the platform reaches their level. Every month, cellmates are assigned a new floor to survive on, constantly shifting the class system. The upcoming film will see a new leader lord over the Platform, and will also introduce audiences to a new protagonist who will attempt to unite their peers and stand against the way the feeding system works. But this time around, the stakes will be higher as, unbeknownst to the eater, some food will prove to be deadly.

Those who tuned in for The Platform know that the movie left the end up to the audience’s interpretation. It’s unclear if we’ll learn more about the mysterious girl from the final minutes or if any of the characters from the movie will return for the sequel. What we do know is that filmmaker Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia will once again hold up a mirror to the broken class system and how the wealth gap pushes so many into disparity.

What Else Has Netflix Released for Geek Week?

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for Netflix fans out there with the streamer dropping teasers, news, and more everywhere you look. Along with The Platform 2, audiences have returned to another cutthroat world through some promotional material for Squid Game Season 2, caught a sneak peek of Zack Snyder’s animated series, Twilight of the Gods, feasted their eyes on both new images for The Dragon Prince, and a first-look trailer for Wolf King.

The week isn’t over yet, so keep your eyes peeled for more to roll out and check out the trailer for The Platform 2 above. In the meantime, you can get caught up on the original film now streaming on Netflix.

It’s raining sequels! While none of them seem to have what it takes to recreate the magic of its original film (I’m looking at you, Joker: Folie à Deux), Netflix’s hit Spanish dystopian thriller The Platform, which made us read a little too much between the lines during the pandemic, is back with a follow-up. The predecessor introduced us to a world where residents of a ‘Vertical Self-Management Center’ are allotted different floors every month. They are fed through a platform that descends filled with food from the top and unsurprisingly, the lower it gets, the lesser food it carries, and chaos ensues. While the first film revelled in keeping us on the edge of our seats, The Platform 2 digs deeper into its theme’s mythology.

Unlike sequels that try to give a quick recap before the audience settles down and savours their first bite of the overpriced popcorn, The Platform 2 wastes no time throwing us right into the middle of the pit. This time, there seems to be an order in place; in a series of intercuts, we are shown how all inmates choose their favourite dish and within the pit, they are expected to pick only the food they had earlier chosen or swap it with someone after their consent. But like every system, some break the rules and a series of incidents make us question whether the system in place was even the right move.

‘House of Spoils’ movie review: Undercooked Arian DeBose horror spoils its feminist broth

The Platform 2, in an attempt to add to the lore of the original film, retains a few of the elements that make the franchise stand apart. For starters, the film moves at a breakneck speed and as with the first film, it helps overcome the fatigue of watching the happenings unravel within the same building with just a few primary characters. And just like The Platform, the sequel takes the same heavy-handed approach towards its symbolism, if not more. As expected, when the residents don’t stick to the rule, the system collapses and floor-mates Perempuan (Milena Smit) and Zamiatin (Hovik Keuchkerian) are spectators who are forced to get themselves involved in this metaphor for our society. They eventually learn about ‘the anointed ones’, those “lucky enough to meet the Master”, who now ensure the law is upheld and the chain that assures a fair food distribution is kept in check.

Runtime: 99 minutes
Storyline: The ‘Vertical Self-Management Center’ has a new food distribution method which is met with contention instead of adding a method to the madness
The metaphors for real-world issues and takes on capitalism and religion are the core ideas on which the franchise is built and the sequel goes overboard with them. The film has blatant references to Christianity with the Master often called the messiah. There’s even a sequence where Perempuan hallucinates an image of the Master in what looks like a recreation of The Last Supper. Add to it that the platform features 333 levels with 2 inmates, adding up to a grand total of the infamous 666.

‘White Bird’ movie review: A stately Helen Mirren rescues this WWII film from a maudlin morass

Perempuan’s journey from being a mere spectator to becoming a cultist who becomes an enforcer only to go against the system and end up as a revolter is where the makers shine in this film that’s too convoluted for its own good. There are some brilliant touches though, like her cellmate who talks about imaginary numbers eventually becoming her imaginary friend — just like in the first film — and the parallel to her life outside the facility to how art literally imitates her life at the fag end of the film.

But The Platform 2 fails to linger on its best moments and with secondary characters that appear and disappear in moments, the film makes it a challenge to build a connection with its audience. Unlike how the first film made us root for Goreng, the sequel fails to humanise the characters whose motives are supposedly to not fall for their animal instincts. The motivation of the loyalists’ group to maintain order by violent means feels like an easier conflict than digging deeper into the psyche of the inmates which made the first part a winner.

Like most sequels in recent times, the number of reasons for The Platform 2 to exist is as low as the amount of food that reaches the final level in the system. And the English dubbing doesn’t work particularly in favour of the sequel. While The Platform felt like an unlimited buffet that had something for everyone, its sequel is a set meal that leaves you unsatiated.

The Platform 2 is currently streaming on Netflix
The highly anticipated sequel to sci-fi horror “The Platform” has set a release date, with the residents of The Pit returning to screens after five years.

The film is set to hit Netflix on Oct. 4, just in time for spooky season.

2019’s “The Platform” is one of the streamer’s most popular Spanish films ever, getting to the fifth spot in the non-English Film Top Ten category with over 82,800,000 views.

The film is set in a multi-storey prison nicknamed “The Pit” which sees its residents get increasingly desperate as they fight for survival.

Every now and then, a foreign language film demands the attention of the world and roars to success against many tough odds. In 2019, and helped by a global crisis that left everyone in need of Netflix, that surprise hit came in the form of Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia's The Platform, a politically charged dystopian thriller from Spain.

After praise at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, where it even managed to pick up the People's Choice Award for Midnight Madness, The Platform was an instant hit with global audiences on Netflix, even being watched by over 56 million households in just four weeks. Now, capitalizing on that success as they so often do, Netflix is ready and waiting for a sequel. So, with all that in mind, here's a look at everything we know about The Platform 2.

After becoming an unexpected hit for indie production companies thanks to its success at TIFF, the Spanish thriller The Platform found itself a home on Netflix after the streamer acquired distribution rights worldwide. Now, the second outing is set to stream once again on the platform, with Netflix now holding exclusive rights. The Platform 2 is one of two horror-esque features heading to Netflix on Friday, October 4, with Greg Jardin's blend of comedy and frights in It's What's Inside making its streaming bow, with the pair making for a wonderful armchair double feature.

Is There a Trailer for 'The Platform 2'?

Officially released on September 19, a clip of the upcoming thriller was released by Netflix, and you can watch it above. As part of their Geek Week festivities, Netflix showcased this brooding, captivating clip to get the blood of fans pumping and anticipation racing for the sequel. This clip was chosen specifically as it finally announced the names of the central characters, a piece of information that had been kept tightly under wraps until this point. In the caption of the clip, Netflix wrote,

"The names of the leading characters in the new film by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia have been revealed. Who is Zamiatin? What motivated Perempuán to enter the platform? Find out in this exclusive preview."

However, the fun wasn't going to stop anytime soon for The Platform lovers, as, just four days later, on September 23, a full trailer was finally released, available to watch above. Tension is clearly the order of the day with this trailer, as the overwhelming atmosphere of the claustrophobic first installment looks set to return. However, this time the stakes (or should that be steaks) seem higher, with the food-based fight for freedom taken up a notch or two after the eye-popping crusade of Goreng (Iván Massagué) in the first outing. Under the trailer, Netflix accompanied a logline that reads,

"Upon entering the platform, each new resident selects a dish of food. Everyone appears to follow an unwritten rule: each person only eats from their chosen dish, ensuring the food reaches all levels. But is this system truly fair?"

Who Is in the Cast of 'The Platform 2'?

In a move that many other franchises might be too scared to make, The Platform looks to be swapping out its entire cast for a fresh batch of faces, some of which might seem recognizable. Leading the ensemble are the duo of Milena Smet as Perempuan and Hovik Keuchkerian as Zamiatin, with the former no stranger to a Netflix original having appeared in the likes of The Girl in the Mirror and The Snow Girl, and the latter an alum of hit shows such as Money Heist, The Night Manager, and Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. Joining this duo in the Platform 2 ensemble are Natalia Tena (Harry Potter) and Óscar Jaenada (Cantinflas), with much of the rest of the ensemble still kept tightly under wraps. To get a full feel for the residents of the sequel's Vertical Self-Management Center, you'll have to check out the film when it arrives.

What Is 'The Platform 2' About?
the_platform_3Image via Netflix
Information regarding the specifics of the plot for The Platform 2 has, like much other news surrounding the sequel, been kept quiet, with Netflix only releasing a teasing logline on their platform that reads:

As a mysterious leader imposes their rule in the Platform, a new resident becomes embroiled in the battle against this controversial method to fight the brutal feeding system. But when eating from the wrong plate becomes a death sentence, how far would you be willing to go to save your life?

Who Is Behind 'The Platform 2'?

There's been a lot of consistency kept between The Platform and its sequel behind the scenes, alongside the addition of more talent in the writing room. Director Gaztelu-Urrutia is back to helm the production, with writers David Desola and Pedro Rivero now joined by Gaztelu-Urrutia and Egoitz Moreno. Producers on the project include Gaztelu-Urrutia, Carlos Juárez, and Raquel Perea.

Like its predecessor, The Platform 2 intentionally leaves viewers with many unanswered questions, but many subtle details throughout its runtime might have provided some concrete answers. After featuring a sequence that reveals many prisoners' dietary choices in the pit, The Platform 2 jumps ahead and shows how someone from the floors above has been feasting on Zamiatin's pizza. Zamiatin is drawn to the idea of eating someone else's food. However, the people above him preach about solidarity and encourage him to stay hungry to ensure everyone gets their share.

This opening sequence sets the stage for the movie's conflict, highlighting how the people in the pit are divided into groups: the loyalists and the barbarians. While the loyalists believe they must act in solidarity and not overconsume, the barbarians prioritize their survival and eat as much as they please. Zamiatin's cellmate, Perepuan, initially supports solidarity. However, the horrors of the pit force her to switch sides. However, upon reaching some of the lowest levels in the prison, she finds answers she did not know she was seeking.

Perempuan Finds Redemption By Letting The Child Go

In The Platform 2's ending arc, a gruesome war ensues between the loyalists and the barbarians, leaving little to no survivors. Perempuan takes the opportunity to block her airways by swallowing a torn section of The Dog painting. As a result, she chokes and falls to the ground, which prevents her from inhaling the gas the pit's cleaners use to neutralize the remaining prisoners. Everything goes as planned when she regains consciousness and finds the cleaners attaching her to the harness that collects all dead bodies.

Our Biggest Unanswered Questions After The Platform
Netflix's The Platform was another hit for the streaming service, but the dystopian horror movie left many big questions unanswered afterward.

However, to her surprise, when she descends to Level 333 with the other bodies, she notices the cleaners bringing a child to the bottommost level and tucking him in. At that moment, she faces a dire choice: she can either act selfishly and escape to the surface of the pit or put her life on the line to protect the child from the prison's atrocities. After recalling her past criminal actions, she chooses the latter. However, while saving the child, she hits her head, suggesting that, like Goreng in The Platform's ending, she, too, experiences a certain death.

When she actively chooses to protect the child instead of harming him, the platform descends below Level 333 to a level that seemingly represents Perempuan's conscience. This is where she encounters other souls, including Zamiatin, who are projections of her dying mind, encouraging her to let the child ascend. They do this because they realize that even though Perempuan, like them, has redeemed herself, her circumstances have corrupted her, making her unworthy of going back.

In an interview (via Digital Spy), director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia confirmed the lowest level does not exist: "Goreng is dead before he arrives, and that's just his interpretation of what he needs to do."

The child, in contrast, gets to ascend because his innocence and purity will play a crucial role in making the world a better place. By letting the child ascend while staying behind, Perempuan makes her final sacrifice to free herself from her guilt and escape from her self-imposed purgatory. At the same time, she also accepts her suffering, realizing that redemption comes at a cost.

The Platform 2's Mid-Credits Scene Explained
The Scene Connects The Sequel To Its Predecessor
A Woman descends down to the bottom of the pit with a child in The Platform 2
In The Platform 2's mid-credits scene, many prisoners descend to the pit's bottom with different children. The scene seemingly highlights that while many continue to suffer in the vertical prison, a few redeem themselves by saving the children in Level 333. It also shows that the Authority above puts a new child at Level 333 every month.

The sequel's mid-credits scene could also imply that the Authority has built many similar vertical prisons across the globe, where each is put through pervasive cycles of the same social experiments. In an interview (via Collider), director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia also confirmed this. "Many and in many different ways," he said when asked whether there are more similar facilities out there.

Why The Administration Puts Children At Level 333
The Children Have Always Been A Part Of The Bigger Social Experiment
People from the Authority, choosing a child to be put in the lowest level of the pit in The Platform 2
While the Administration's purpose of conducting the social experiment in the pit remains unclear, it seems like they do not wish to encourage solidarity among the prisoners. Instead, they only want to observe what leads to them acting in solidarity. Put simply, the prisoners are mere lab rats for the Administration to understand the depths of human behavior, probably because they wish to implement their findings in the real world to establish control. As shown in The Platform 2's ending, the children, too, are mere ploys in the experiment.

...given how the Authority puts the children in such a dangerous environment only for the sake of experiment, it seems likely they do not care whether they make it back or don't.

The fact that the Authority does not even spare children highlights how far they are willing to go to exert control over the masses. Since the prisoners are unaware of how the child ended up in Level 333, they feel hopeful when they send the child to the surface. However, given how the Authority puts the children in such a dangerous environment only for the sake of the experiment, it seems likely they do not care whether the children make it back.

Why Perempuan Came To The Pit
She Wanted To Free Herself From Guilt

Flashes of Perempuan's interview before she entered the pit reveal she was an accomplished artist. She had once created a sculpture of a dog that had sharp edges. Many had warned her to keep stanchions around it because its jagged edges could be dangerous. However, she did not listen. When her boyfriend visited her home one day, his son slipped and fell over one of the sharp edges of the sculpture. Instead of accepting her mistake, Perempuan hired the best lawyers and avoided going to prison.

The philosophical sci-fi take, which the movie offers, can be found in a few other sci-fi gems too, which have similar themes or premises.

She even sold the sculpture for a huge sum, using the proceeds to bolster her career as an artist. However, her guilt eventually got the best of her. Despite avoiding legal trouble, she could not help but believe she deserved to be punished. Therefore, she decided to imprison herself in the pit, hoping that she would be able to forgive herself. She eventually achieves this by sacrificing herself to ensure the child from Level 333 stays safe and reaches Level 0.

Why Zamiatin Jumped To The Bottom Of The Pit
He Finally Confronted His Life's Harsh Truths

While Zamiatin tries to portray himself as a formidable figure in the pit, flashbacks of his interview with the Authority reveal that he has been living a lie. He claims to have left his children and burnt his parents' home. However, the interview discloses his wife and children left him before his parents sent him to the pit to discipline him. After going without food for weeks, Zamiatin's fake exterior shatters, and he finally starts accepting the truth about his life instead of creating a self-comforting imaginary narrative.

The pit in The Platform movies has 333 floors, with each floor accommodating two people. This implies that there are 666 people in the pit, which is referred to as the "number of the beast" in the Book of Revelation (Revelation 13:18). The 333 can also be seen as a reference to the Third Circle of Hell in Dante's Inferno, which is reserved for punishing gluttons.

The lack of sustenance in the pit becomes a metaphor for his unfulfilled life as he realizes he kept lying to himself even after entering the pit. To repent for his mistakes, he chooses not to lie to himself for the last time and leaps to the pit's bottom. His leap becomes a final rejection of all the lies he had adopted throughout his life as he experiences a certain death.

The Symbolism Behind The Drowning Dog Painting Explained
The Painting Is A Reflection Of Perempuan's Journey
Painting of a dog drowning, as shown in The Platform 2
The painting of the drowning dog featured in the original Netflix sci-fi movie was created by Spanish artist Francisco de Goya. Referred to as "The Dog" (Spanish: "El Perro"), the painting is often interpreted as a man's struggle against evil forces. In The Platform 2, the painting seemingly represents Perempuan's journey, where each new obstacle is greater than the last after she refuses to take accountability for her actions in the real world.

Therefore, when she swallows the painting, she takes responsibility for her past actions and accepts the suffering that comes with them. With this, she experiences a certain death that leads her to the path of redemption and self-forgiveness. Since almost every character arrives in the pit to seek redemption or grapple with their shortcomings, the setting can be seen as a representation of the biblical Tower of Bable.

...like the humans in the tale of the Tower of Babel, The Platform 2's characters struggle to find peace because they seek it through self-glorification.

Just like the Tower of Babel represents humanity's effort to reach God through shallow means, the pit reflects Perempuan and Zamiatin's desperation to make up for their past shortcomings. However, like the humans in the tale of the Tower of Babel, The Platform 2's characters struggle to find peace because they seek it through self-glorification. Only when Perempuan and Zamiatin surrender to their suffering and acknowledge their failures do they walk toward redemption.

The Anointed One's Law Explained
The Law Strictly Promotes Solidarity
Óscar Jaenada as Dagin Babi, holding his fist up, in The Platform
To enforce solidarity among the people in the pit, the Anointed One, Dagin Babi, implements a law that his followers religiously obey. Referred to as the Loyalists, Dagin Babi's followers are expected to eat only the meals they demanded during their interviews before entering the pit. All loyalists keep the top buttons of their shirts closed and ensure that the people in their neighboring cells are following the law. When someone defies the law, the four people directly above the offender are responsible for serving justice to them.

The Anointed One's law divides the people in the pit into two factions:

The Loyalists
The Barbarians
Dagin Babi's socialist methods stand against the trickle-down economic structure the pit generally follows. Perempuan initially supports his ideals because she finds it fair. However, she soon learns that Dagin Babi is no different from the greedy barbarians when he adopts extreme measures to implement the law. Therefore, she eventually adopts a middle ground, where she teams with the Barbarians but refuses to resort to cannibalism for survival.

What The Platform 2's Ending Really Means
The Sequel Is Open To Interpretation
Perempuan and Zamiatin looking up in The Platform 2
If Netflix's The Platform 2's dystopian setting is merely perceived as a skewed social experiment, the ending highlights that the Authority remains in control regardless of whether the prisoners in the pit send the children to Level 0 as "The Message." The people above will continue setting up ploys and adopting cheap tactics to control the environment inside the prison.

Since many characters, like Perempuan and Goreng, ultimately accept their sins and sacrifice themselves to save the children, their redemption offsets the sense of hopelessness that permeates the pit due to the Authority's experiments.

However, in both movies, the pit is also portrayed as a self-imposed purgatory for characters. They can descend further into hell or repent of their sins. Since many characters, like Perempuan and Goreng, ultimately accept their sins and sacrifice themselves to save the children, their redemption offsets the sense of hopelessness that permeates the pit due to the Authority's experiments.

How The Platform 2's Ending Sets Up A Third Movie
The Platform Seemingly Has Franchise Potential

Since The Platform 2's mid-credits scene hints that many pits exist in different parts of the world, a third movie could take the Bird Box approach and unfold in a completely different location. Although The Platform 2 clears the air surrounding many of its predecessor's mysteries, it also leaves one with new questions surrounding the Authority's true purpose. A third installment in the movie franchise could explore the broader implications of these mysteries and unexplored ideas. However, The Platform 2's follow-up will only see the light of the day if the sequel performs well on Netflix.
