A Thousand Blows trailer has officially been revealed ahead of the Peaky Blinders movie release. The 2025 Hulu show will tell the story of the Forty Elephants, a group of women who turn to shoplifting to survive and thrive in England from the 1800s through the 1950s. While they will be featured heavily, the show will primarily focus on Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) and Alec Munroe (Francis Lovehall), who are two Jamaican immigrants who are introduced to boxer Sugar Goodson (Stephen Graham). The show is led by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.

The trailer from Hulu showcases the first look at a crime drama, but there are some elements that the show fails to reveal in earnest. Rather than focusing on the criminal underground, the teaser showcases the reality of life as a boxer in a period setting. It does not reveal the Forty Elephants, though it does feature women hinting at the presence of a dangerous criminal underground. It will also feature Peaky Blinders veteran Graham. Check it out below:

What A Thousand Blows Trailer Reveals
The Stunning Appearance Unsurprisingly Matches Peaky Blinders

The trailer is an early reveal that Thousand Blows will not be shifting too far away from the aesthetic of Peaky Blinders. It features the same dark scenery, period-inspired clothing, and a similar approach to a large cast filled with criminals. Peaky Blinders is known for redefining British drama, so it is no great surprise that it would maintain the same overall appearance, especially since Knight is leading the show. He even elected to reintroduce Graham, who served as Hayden Stagg in season 6.

Knight is not just a skilled writer and period piece creator, but he also created Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

While the Peaky Blinders' ensemble cast is from 1919, A Thousand Blows is likely to take place in the 1880s. Its illegal boxing ring will also be a different concept than the general depiction of a criminal epic showcased in Knight's hit show. The trailer did hide the influence of the Forty Elephants, but it remains to be seen if it is simply disguising the reveal. They could be essential characters, but they could also simply operate in the background. It will depend entirely on Knight's interest in their underground operations.

Our Take On A Thousand Blows' Trailer
Steven Knight Has Already Proven Himself
Stephen Graham shirtless in the A Thousand Blows trailer
Unsurprisingly, the trailer is a stunning reveal that showcases just how realistic Knight's new setting is. The costuming and make-up are brilliant, and the overall stories that the characters only hint at are compelling even as a mere implication. The very idea of a story about a woman-led gang of shoplifters in the late 1800s is certainly enough to draw attention, and the boxing element only makes that better. After Peaky Blinders' season 6 ending, it is excellent to see that Knight is already back to a new period piece with A Thousand Blows' stunning trailer.

The upcoming series follows a Jamaican man, Hezekiah Moscow, who finds himself thrust into the violent melting pot of post-industrial revolution London’s East End. As he’s drawn into the criminal underbelly of the boxing scene, he meets Mary Carr, the leader of a notorious all-female London gang called The Forty Elephants. Knight created the series while his long-time collaborator, Graham, stars and executive produce. The next 18 months or so are shaping up to be a cracking good time for fans of writer-director Steven Knight, with the BAFTA-winning creative serving up another period crime drama with the latter.

The forthcoming 12-part series follows the fortunes of Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) and Alec Munroe (Francis Lovehall) — two best friends fresh off the boat from Jamaica circa 1880s, who find themselves entangled with a criminal underground.

Backed into a corner, and forced to fight for survival in the “violent melting pot of Victorian London’s East End,” they come up against dangerous veteran boxer Sugar Goodson (Stephen Graham), whose rivalry with Hezekiah spills outside of the ring.

In the background of A Thousand Blows, we’ll also become acquainted with the Forty Elephants — a notorious all-female crime syndicate that actually existed in 19th-20th century London, and specialised in shoplifting to get by.

“I’m really thrilled to be working on this project with Stephen [Graham] as well as the very talented production team and group of writers,” said Steven Knight.

“I always love to delve into untold history, and this is a story that really deserves to be told.”

“To be able to work with [Steven Knight] again and the talented team of writers we have for this project is truly wonderful,” added Stephen Graham, who appeared in the sixth and final season of Peaky Blinders as Hayden Stagg.

“To tell the story of these incredible characters during this period of time in London is a joy.”

In addition to creator and executive producer, Knight has served as head writer for A Thousand Blows. Stephen Graham, on the other hand, juggled being a character actor extraordinaire with duties as an executive producer alongside Hannah Walters via their joint company Matriarch Productions.

The aforementioned names are joined by Erin Doherty as Mary Carr, Ziggy Heath as Peggy Bettinson, Nadia Albina as Verity Ross, Jemma Carlton as Belle Downer, Caoilfhionn Dunne as Anne Glover, Morgan Hilaire as Esme Long, and Warrior alum Jason Tobin — who we spoke to about this briefly during an interview last year.

Tobin explained: “Like Peaky Blinders, it’s a dramatised work of fiction, but the characters are based on real-life people. Although the tone of the two shows is completely different.”

“In A Thousand Blows, I play Mr Lao and he’s the polar opposite of [Warrior character] Young Jun — a mild-mannered intellectual in exile in London who’d rather not be seen. Not the life of the party like Young Jun. He carries a secret that will be revealed later in season 1.”

“And unlike Young Jun, Lao is not a fighter or at least not in the physical sense. So there’ll be no fisticuffs with Sugar Goodson unfortunately.”

A Thousand Blows is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in 2025 (specific release date TBA), potentially right before the Peaky Blinders movie arrives, though probably before Steven Knight’s other long-gestating project about Enzo Ferrari — check out the teaser trailer above,
