I have been in the tech industry for many years and have a good background in personal computers. From that I entered online selling on Amazon.ca. This worked well for several years but I ended up being Amazoned… (Amazon competes with you by buying your best selling products and selling them at prices you can’t possibly compete with. We went from over $20,000/mo down to $2000 [Ma1] within a few months. Needless to say we crashed). Being Amazoned is a thing. They even have lawyers specializing helping people who have been Amazoned in the US!

I had developed an interest in produce and when my Amazon business crashed I explored going into commercial growing in BC. That is when I actually became aware of the restrictions farmers face. Due to the forest fires that were going through the area north of Kamloops, we had to walk away from everything. So I have been pulling myself up from my bootstraps since then.

While in a small town in Saskatchewan I started a greenhouse. We used to travel 2.5 hours one way to sell produce at one of the larger cities, so we know firsthand some of the challenges farmers have getting their products to market, so it was a natural evolution to bring my computer knowledge together with my understanding of farming issues to create a system to help farmers get their products to market.

Covid happened in the middle of all this and at that time I was on Vancouver Island trying to build a goat milk soap business and not feeling comfortable without a solid community, I came back to Alberta and settled in Lethbridge. When I first got here I was waiting to join with a group to do a farm to table, but after a year of waiting I decided that person and that group was me! Over the past 2 and a half years GFGU has been steadily growing. Currently we have 40+ farmers with almost 600 products and 20+ volunteers. We are still quite small though we deliver food from the Edmonton area right down to Medicine Hat.

For me one of the most exciting things about this venture is that we are developing quite a strong community and the volunteers that we have who make it all happen are absolutely amazing!
