On Wednesday, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis requested that the Georgia Appeals Court reinstate several charges against former President Donald Trump that had previously been dismissed by a judge. This request came as Georgia experienced record-breaking early voter turnout, with over 600,000 people casting ballots on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Willis made her appeal as voters lined up to participate in the 2024 presidential election. In August 2023, she had indicted Trump and 18 co-defendants for their attempts to challenge the 2020 election results. However, in September, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee dismissed two of the charges, stating they were outside Willis’s jurisdiction as a local prosecutor, not a federal one.

To date, five of the 13 original charges against Trump have been dismissed. Earlier this year, Judge McAfee dropped three other charges, including allegations tied to a controversial phone call Trump made to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger on January 2, 2021.

Willis is now asking the appeals court to reinstate six charges, three of which directly involve Trump. Her office also requested an oral argument to discuss the dismissed charges. According to NBC News, Willis’s team argued that the trial court erred in quashing these counts, particularly those related to the alleged solicitation of elected officials to breach their oaths of office.

Trump’s hearing to disqualify Fani Willis is scheduled for December 5, 2024, moving the RICO case beyond the 2024 election cycle. Initially, the hearing was set for October 4.
