F. Jack Dona:
I was born Fernando Jack Dona in 1965 and grew up on the island of Oahu. Both of my parents are immigrants. My mother was born in the ancient village of Kukuihaele on the big island of Hilo, Hawaii then a territory of the United States. Her side of the family came from Spain (Grandmother) and Portugal (Grandfather) and they met in Puerto Rico. My mother's family followed the sugar cane plantation companies and arrived in Hawaii around the turn of the last century.

My grandfather was from a family of famous ship builders in Portugal, and he met my grandmother in Puerto Rico. Moving to Hawaii with the plantation corporation, they cut sugar cane and picked pineapple. My grandfather was also a boat builder conscripted to build pontoon boats in World War 2 for the Marine Corps. When Hawaii became the 50th State, everyone gave up their foreign citizenship and became US Citizens. My first name is after my grandfather's oldest son, my uncle, Fernando Rivera Jr. He was drafted in 1950 and was part of "Task Force Smith" in the Korean War. After being captured at the Fall of Taejon, he was forced marched, along with other POWs for 8 months until he could go no further. He was then executed by the Chinese Army and dumped in a ditch on the side of the road along with 20 other US Army Soldiers. His remains have never been recovered.

I am on the primary notification list for notification by DOD Repatriations Branch, for family POW/MIA member remains due to still be repatriated. This is due to my mother, and all of her brothers and sisters, have passed away.

My father escaped Nicaragua in the 1940's when the first of the Samoza Dictators took over, Anastasio Samoza Garcia. He took over the country and began his crack down on the old Spanish Lords and the families of old Nicaragua. A quiet purge was ongoing so our entire family fled Nicaragua and left behind a vast estate, now owned by communist party members of the Sandinistas. They all moved to the USA. Some were doctors, others lawyers, most just wealthy enough that they had the means to escape. My grandfather Jack Oswell, is actually my step-grandfather. He met my grandmother and my father in the 1940's in San Jose, Costa Rica. My Grandpa Jack was working at the US Embassy, then assigned to the US Marines. That was around 1947. I never met my real grandfather, my Dad's real father. From what I understand, he was a fabulously wealthy man who owned a great estate in Uruguay. My mother worked as a plantation worker and met my Father at the local USO in Kalihi Valley, HI. My father joined the Air Force in 1950, and retired as a Master Sergeant that fought in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Air Medal, among other decorations. My father was a navigator on troop transport aircraft and later in 1958 became a pioneer in computers. He passed away on June 8th, 2024.

I served in the US Military for 23 years enlisting in 1983 in the United States Air Force. I had one year of DEP Time and one year of JROTC (1982). During that time as a plumber/pipefitter working in Civil Engineering, I
was selected as part of the installation team for the intermediate range nuclear weapons then being deployed in Europe. This was when I first obtained my security clearance as the team I was part of installed the water supply systems for Nuclear Weapons Storage Area (NWSA), Ramstein AB, West Germany. After my enlistment ended, I went into the USAF Reserves (IRR). After 2 years in the reserves I went back on active duty, this time enlisting in the US Army in 1989.

My military occupational specialty was MOS 33R or Intelligence Electronic Warfare Aviation Systems Repairman. I have held every front line leadership position culminating with my being selected to be the Training Development & Support Directorate Sergeant Major, USAIC, Ft. Huachuca. The highlight of my military career, and the award I am most proud of, was receiving the Knowlton Award from the Military Intelligence Corp Association and my name is listed in the MI Hall of Fame/Museum. I also received an Award of Excellence for my work while assigned to the NCS-National Security Agency for 5 years. After retiring in 2005, I worked for 8 years as an IEW Field Systems Engineer for various defense contractors, primarily deploying to combat zones. I finished my career by being hand selected to work as a Senior Field Systems Engineer on the USNS Observation Island and the USNS Invincible, which were ships designed and equipped with missile launch detection systems.

I am now permanently retired and reside in Sierra Vista, AZ. I am married
to the love of my life Diane, and have one child, Hannah, who is a world-renowned pastry chef with her catering business based in Ireland. @MSG_Jack_Dona
