Episode 2593: Living the Faith, Not Just Bearing the Name - Morning Episode
Welcome to today’s episode, where we reflect on what it means to be authentically Christian, not just in name, but in heart and action. As St. Ignatius of Antioch, one of the earliest martyrs of the Church, boldly declared:
"It is not that I want merely to be called a Christian, but to actually be one. Yes, if I prove to be one, then I can have the name."
These words challenge us to consider: Are we truly living our faith? Do our lives align with what it means to be followers of Christ, or have we grown comfortable with the label without embodying the reality?
Ignatius’s insight points to a core truth of Catholicism: Faith is not just intellectual assent but a way of life a life lived in union with Christ and in communion with the Church. Today, we will explore what it means to live our faith with integrity, guided by Scripture, Tradition, and the wisdom of the saints.

Segment 1: A Faith Lived, Not Worn as a Badge
St. Ignatius of Antioch’s words remind us that Christianity is not merely a title; it is a transformation of the heart. To be Christian means to be conformed to Christ, both in word and deed. As St. James teaches, “Faith without works is dead” (James 2:26). It is not enough to claim the name of Christian we must live it fully, with every fiber of our being.
St. Ignatius lived out his faith to the point of martyrdom. On his journey to Rome, where he would face execution, he wrote letters urging Christians to remain faithful, even under persecution. His desire was not merely to escape death, but to imitate Christ in his suffering, saying, “I am God’s wheat, and I shall be ground by the teeth of beasts, that I may become the pure bread of Christ.”
His life and death challenge us: Are we ready to carry our own crosses and follow Christ wherever He leads, no matter the cost? St. Paul echoes this call in Romans 12:1, urging believers to offer themselves as living sacrifices to God. To be a Christian is to live with the heart of a disciple fully surrendered to Christ, always seeking to grow in virtue, and sharing in His mission to proclaim the truth.

Segment 2: The Oneness of the Faith in the Church’s Tradition
In another powerful quote, St. Ignatius speaks of the unity of the Church’s faith across the world:
"The Church, which has spread everywhere, even to the ends of the earth, received the faith from the apostles and their disciples... Though there are different languages, there is but one tradition."
This unity reflects Christ’s prayer at the Last Supper: “That they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you” (John 17:21). The Church is not merely a collection of individuals with different beliefs but a single Body of Christ, united in doctrine, worship, and love. As St. Paul teaches in Ephesians 4:5, there is “one Lord, one faith, one baptism.”
The Catholic Church holds fast to the faith entrusted to the apostles, preaching and teaching with one voice. No matter where we are in the world, the essence of the faith remains the same. The truth is not dependent on cultural trends or personal opinions, for, as Ignatius says, “No one is above the Master.” Our task is to receive what has been handed down and live it faithfully, without adding to or subtracting from it.
This is a powerful reminder in today’s world, where many are tempted to alter the faith to fit modern ideas. But as Catholics, we are called to remain steadfast, trusting that what the Church teaches has been revealed by Christ Himself.

Segment 3: Abiding in Christ, the True Vine
The foundation of this life of faith is our union with Christ. In John 15:4-5, Jesus teaches:
"Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing."
This passage illustrates the source of our strength and perseverance: our relationship with Christ. If we attempt to live the Christian life apart from Him, we will wither, like a branch cut off from the vine. But when we remain rooted in Him through prayer, the sacraments, and acts of charity we are nourished by His grace and bear fruit that will last.
St. Teresa of Avila also emphasized the importance of abiding in Christ, saying, “Whoever has God lacks nothing; God alone suffices.” This spiritual truth speaks to the simplicity of authentic faith: Everything we need is found in Christ. Our task is to remain close to Him, trusting in His providence and letting His love flow through us to others.

Practical Ways to Live the Faith Authentically
Living as a true Christian means aligning every aspect of our lives with the teachings of Christ and His Church. Here are a few practical ways to deepen your faith and live it more authentically:
1. Daily Prayer and Scripture Reading: Develop a habit of prayer and spend time each day reading and meditating on Scripture. Through prayer, we remain connected to the Vine and open to God’s guidance.
2. Frequent Participation in the Sacraments: Regular reception of the Eucharist and Confession nourishes our souls and strengthens us to live holy lives.
3. Acts of Charity: Faith comes alive through love. Serve others selflessly, especially the poor, the sick, and the marginalized.
4. Study the Faith: Take time to learn more about the teachings of the Church. Read the Catechism, the writings of the saints, and Church documents to deepen your understanding of the faith.
5. Witness to the Faith: Be a witness to Christ in your daily life. Live with integrity, speak the truth in love, and let your actions reflect the Gospel.

Conclusion
As St. Ignatius of Antioch teaches, the name “Christian” is not just a title—it is a way of life, marked by faith, love, and sacrifice. To be Christian is to be united with Christ, the True Vine, and to live in communion with His Church.
In a world that often pulls us in different directions, let us stay rooted in the truth of the Gospel. Let us live our faith with joy, courage, and integrity, knowing that the God who began this good work in us will bring it to completion.

Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of our faith and for the example of the saints who lived it so fully. Give us the grace to remain united with Your Son, Jesus Christ, and to live as authentic witnesses to Your love. Strengthen us to persevere in faith, hope, and charity, bearing fruit that will last. Keep us always close to You, and may our lives bring glory to Your name. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Thank you for joining us for today’s episode. Until next time, may you remain in Christ and bear much fruit for the glory of God.
