10 KM RANGE / Poland tests anti-drone Browning-type 12.7mm WKLM machine gun

Polish manufacturer Zakłady Mechaniczne Tarnów has tested its anti-drone system built on the RADA multifunction radar and the Browning-type 12.7mm WKLM machine gun. / Zakłady Mechaniczne "Tarnów" in cooperation with the Military University of Technology has been made public .

At the end of 2021, tests of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) combat system developed by designers and scientists from Zakłady Mechaniczne "Tarnów" SA and the Military University of Technology were carried out at the Central Air Force Training Ground in Ustka. The aim of the tests was to conduct research in training ground conditions, i.e. to check the possibility of detecting, tracking and combating mini and micro unmanned aerial vehicles.

The developed system is based on a rapid-fire multi-barrel machine gun WKLM caliber 12.7 mm, integrated with an optoelectronic head equipped with high-class cameras (day and thermal) and a laser rangefinder. Additionally, the system is supported by an external radar on a tripod, which detects small UAVs from a distance of up to 15 km. The system can optionally be equipped with a radar from another Polish company specializing in anti-drone systems - Advanced Protection Systems (APS).

The rifle's range is up to 2000m, so if the UAV is detected earlier, the system must allow the drone to approach in order to effectively neutralize it. However, once the drone enters the rifle's effective range, it is able to fire a series of 12.7 mm rounds at a speed of 3600/minute. With continuous fire, the series would last about 6.5 seconds, because - as the film shows - the belt of ammunition connected in the chamber to the rifle has 400 rounds.
