Coogler began developing the genre film through his production company Proximity Media by January 2024, when Jordan was cast. Warner Bros. Pictures acquired distribution rights the next month following a bidding war, and casting for additional roles took place in April, ahead of the start of filming that month. Filming wrapped in July 2024.

Sinners is scheduled to be released in the United States on March 7, 2025.

In January 2024, it was reported that an untitled genre film directed, written and co-produced by Ryan Coogler, based on his original idea, through his production company Proximity Media. Longtime collaborator Michael B. Jordan was cast in the lead role.[3] Sony Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Universal Pictures were in a bidding war to acquire the distribution rights to the film. Coogler's script was described as a period genre vampire film. The budget has been said to be around $90 million.[4] The following month, it was announced that Warner Bros. won the distribution rights to the film.[5]

In April, Jack O'Connell, Delroy Lindo, Jayme Lawson, Wunmi Mosaku, Omar Benson Miller, Hailee Steinfeld, Li Jun Li and Lola Kirke joined the cast in undisclosed roles, with O'Connell portraying the villain.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] In May, Yao, Miles Caton, Peter Dreimanis and Christian Robinson rounded out the cast.[14][15]

Principal photography began in New Orleans on April 13, 2024, with Autumn Durald Arkapaw serving as the cinematographer.[16] Filming occurred using the working title Grilled Cheese.[17] Filming wrapped on July 17.[18] The production spent $67.6 million on-location in Louisiana.[19]

Ryan Coogler has unveiled the first trailer for Sinners, a vampire thriller starring Michael B. Jordan. The highly anticipated film, set for release by Warner Bros. on March 7, 2025, marks Coogler’s return with an original story.

‘Abigail’ movie review: Universal’s vampire flick is all style and no substance

In the trailer, Jordan’s character, Smoke, delivers a haunting voiceover: “I’ve seen men die in ways, I ain’t even know was possible...I ain’t ever seen no demons, no ghosts, no magic — ’til now.” As the tension builds, a preacher warns, “You keep dancing with the devil, and one day he’s going to follow you home.”

The film follows twin brothers, both played by Jordan, as they return to their hometown to escape troubled pasts, only to discover a greater evil awaiting them.

Coogler wrote and directed Sinners, which also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo. This marks another collaboration between Coogler and Jordan, who have previously worked together on Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Black Panther.

With Sinners, Coogler brings an original vision to the screen, offering fans a departure from his previous work on well-established franchises.
Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan‘s fifth collaboration has been shrouded in secrecy since it was announced in January. Now eager film fans are getting their first look at “Sinners” — and all its bloody goodness. The film opens March 7, 2025 from Warner Bros.

The highly-anticipated horror thriller is based on an original script by Coogler, with the project set in the 1930s Jim Crow era-South and filmed earlier this year in the New Orleans area. But beyond those basic details, everything about the project — from the title to its plot — had been kept under wraps. Then, on Monday, the supernatural thriller was announced to be titled “Sinners.” Later, Jordan shared the film’s poster (a closeup shot of the actor in two different costumes, confirming rumors that he’s playing a dual role) on social media, with the caption, “Dance with the devil…and he’ll follow you home.”

The cast is full of heavy hitters, toplined by Jordan, Delroy Lindo (“Da 5 Bloods,” “UnPrisoned”), Jack O’Connell (“Ferrari,” “Back to Black”) and Hailee Steinfeld (“True Grit,” “Dickinson,” Sony’s animated “Spider-Verse” franchise). Wunmi Mosaku (“Loki,” “Lovecraft Country”), Jayme Lawson (“The Woman King,” “MLK/X”), Omar Benson Miller (“The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey”), Li Jun Li (“Babylon”), Lola Kirke (“Gone Girl,” “Winning Time”), plus newcomers Yao, Miles Caton and Peter Dreimanis round out the ensemble.

Coogler directed the film — his first time behind the camera since 2022’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” — and produced the project via his Proximity Media banner, along with Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. Executive producers are Proximity’s Ludwig Göransson (fresh off his second Oscar win after composing the score for “Oppenheimer”) and Rebecca Cho, as well as Will Greenfield. “Black Panther” franchise collaborators — director of photography Autumn Durald Arkapaw, Oscar-winning production designer Hannah Beachler, editor Michael P. Shawver and Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter — also return. Casting director Francine Maisler, who worked with Coogler and co. on “Creed,” returns to head that department.

Jordan has appeared in all five of Coogler’s films, beginning with “Fruitvale Station” in 2013 and continuing with the “Creed” and “Black Panther” franchises. News of this latest team-up surfaced in January when it was reported that Coogler and Jordan were teaming up for a mysterious new project that was showcased to executives and buyers at the WME offices under a cone of silence.

A heated bidding war ensued with WME and M88, which rep Coogler and Jordan, handling the dealmaking. Warner Bros. won the rights to the buzzy package, reuniting the film studio’s co-chairs and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy with Coogler and Jordan after their successful collaboration on “Creed III.” (The execs greenlit the boxing movie during their tenure at MGM.) The deal was also uniquely structured so that some of the movie’s rights will revert to Coogler over the course of several decades.

Anticipation ratcheted up another notch this spring when cinematographer Arkapaw, who lensed “Wakanda Forever,” posted a shot of the film’s clapperboard inscribed “Take 1” and the simple caption, “Get ready.” (Arkapaw blurred out the film’s working title “Grilled Cheese” with black heart emojis.) The DP had already teased that the film was in prep by posting a photo of Coogler looking into the viewfinder of a Panavision system 65 camera.

Warner Bros. Pictures released the first trailer for Coogler's new film Sinners, which sees Jordan, 37, pulling double duty playing twin brothers who encounter an evil presence in their hometown.

An official synopsis for Sinners, which also stars Hailee Steinfeld, describes the thriller as "a new vision of fear" and includes a quote heard from one character in the teaser: “You keep dancing with the devil, one day he’s gonna follow you home.”

"Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back," the synopsis reads.

Sinners first received media attention in January 2024, when The Hollywood Reporter reported that Coogler wrote the then-untitled film as a wholly original project, his first since 2013's Fruitvale Station, which also starred Jordan. Warner Bros. Pictures revealed the project's title in an announcement shared to social media on Monday, Sept. 23, writing in a caption alongside a short title reveal, "Sinners are coming."

The upcoming film marks director Coogler's first movie since 2022's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and another collaboration between Coogler, 38, and Jordan, who memorably originated his Adonis Creed character in Coogler's 2015 film Creed and portrayed the villain Killmonger in the pair's 2018 original Black Panther film.

Steinfeld, 27, is seen in the trailer only briefly, during a moment of her dancing. The movie marks her first appearance since she made a cameo appearance in Marvel's 2023 movie The Marvels.

Delroy Lindo and Jack O'Connell also costar in Sinners, which releases in theaters March 7, 2025.
"You keep dancing with the devil, one day he's going to follow you home."

This is the ominous warning uttered within Sinners, the latest collaboration between Academy Award-nominated writer/director Ryan Coogler and critically heralded actor Michael B. Jordan. The two have previously worked together on such outstanding films as Black Panther and Creed. So based on that alone, we're already seated. But Warner Bros. has released one fiery trailer for their latest work, and it's haunting all on its own.

In Sinners, Michael B. Jordan stars as twins, who try to escape their troubled lives by returning to their hometown. But once there, they find a horrid evil has taken root. Time to bring out the big guns.

Joining Jordan onscreen are Hailee Steinfeld (Hawkeye), Jack O’Connell (Ferrari), Wunmi Mosaku (Passenger), Jayme Lawson (The Woman King), Omar Benson Miller (True Lies) and Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods). And re-teaming with Coogler behind the scenes are his Black Panther collaborators: director of photography Autumn Durald Arkapaw, Oscar-winning production designer Hannah Beachler, editor Michael P. Shawver, Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson, and Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter.

Sure, this trailer, tense and mysterious yet terrifying, is a solid sales pitch for buying tickets, but this team stuffed with talent and Oscar-worthy skills has got us most excited for this curious thriller.

Sinners will open in theaters only nationwide on March 7, 2025.
