Nosferatu is an upcoming American gothic horror film written and directed by Robert Eggers. It is a remake of the 1922 German film, which was in turn based on Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. The film stars Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe.

Development on the film began in 2015 when Eggers planned to make it his second film, describing it as a passion project, but eventually opted to delay production. Skarsgård and Depp were cast as leads in September 2022. Hoult joined the cast the following month, with the remaining cast confirmed in early 2023. Filming primarily took place in and around Prague between February and May 2023.

Nosferatu is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States by Focus Features on December 25, 2024.

Development
In July 2015, a remake of Nosferatu (1922) was announced with Robert Eggers writing and directing. Jay Van Hoy and Lars Knudsen were slated to produce the film for Studio 8.[4] In November 2016, Eggers expressed surprise that the Nosferatu remake was his second planned film, saying, "It feels ugly and blasphemous and egomaniacal and disgusting for a filmmaker in my place to do Nosferatu next. I was really planning on waiting a while, but that's how fate shook out."[5] During an interview with Den of Geek around the release of The Lighthouse (2019), Robert Eggers revealed that although he had dedicated a lot of time to bringing the iconic horror film into the 21st century, he didn't know when or if it would happen. Despite that, Eggers said, "Look, I spent so many years and so much time, just so much blood on it, yeah, it would be a real shame if it never happened".[6]

Casting
In August 2017, Anya Taylor-Joy was cast.[7] Years later, in early 2022, Eggers was asked if he and Taylor-Joy still communicated about the project, saying, "We definitely talk about it, and I don't know why it's been so hard to make happen."[8] It was revealed in March 2022 that English singer Harry Styles was briefly attached to an undisclosed role in the film, but eventually dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.[9]

In September 2022, it was announced that Bill Skarsgård was set to star as the eponymous Nosferatu, Count Orlok, with Lily-Rose Depp cast to replace Taylor-Joy.[10] Skarsgård had originally been offered the lead role of Thomas Hutter while Taylor-Joy was still attached to star before the project was stalled for a few years.[11] In October 2022, Nicholas Hoult joined the cast.[12] In January 2023, Willem Dafoe, who had previously portrayed Max Schreck/Count Orlok in Shadow of the Vampire (2000), joined the cast after having co-starred in The Lighthouse.[13] Emma Corrin would join the cast the following month.[14] Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Simon McBurney, and Ralph Ineson were announced as joining cast at the start of production in late February 2023.[15][16]

Filming
Principal photography began in the Czech Republic on February 20, 2023,[17] with filming taking place at Barrandov Studios in Prague by March.[18] Later that month, the crew was shooting on location at the 14th-century Rožmitál pod Castle in Rožmitál pod Třemšínem and Prague's Invalidovna complex, a Baroque building registered as a national landmark.[19] Some exterior shots were captured in Romania.[20] Cinematographer Jarin Blaschke said that the film was shot in color and was reminiscent of 19th-century Romanticism.[21] Filming wrapped on May 19, 2023.[22][23]

To prepare for playing the eponymous character, Skarsgård lost a significant amount of weight and worked with an opera singer to lower his vocal range, and spent up to six hours a day having prosthetic makeup applied. Speaking on his experience, Skarsgård said: "It was like conjuring pure evil. It took a while for me to shake off the demon that had been conjured inside of me."[11]

Release
Nosferatu is scheduled for release on December 25, 2024, by Focus Features domestically and Universal Pictures internationally.[24][25]

Others in the star-studded cast include Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney and Willem Dafoe.

Nosferatu marks Eggers’ second film for Focus Features, on the heels of his Viking epic The Northman, co-financed by Focus and New Regency, which grossed $70 million worldwide. Eggers produced alongside Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus, Jeff Robinov, and John Graham. Previously, Columbus served as an EP on Eggers’ The Witch and The Lighthouse.

Universal International is handling the new film’s overseas distribution.

While there have been several previous films centered on the vampire Nosferatu, the most famous would be F.W. Murnau’s iconic silent film from 1922, a take on Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, which has endured as a seminal work in horror cinema. Others that have followed include Werner Herzog’s 1979 Nosferatu the Vampyre and E. Elias Merhige’s 2000 film Shadow of the Vampire, which brought Dafoe an Academy Award nomination for his performance as Max Schreck, the actor who played the role of vampire Count Orlok in the aforementioned Murnau film.

Coming off the June 21 release of The Bikeriders, the biker gang drama marking the latest feature from Jeff Nichols, Focus Features’ upcoming slate includes Baltasar Kormákur’s romantic drama Touch (July 12), the coming-of-age dramedy Dìdi (July 26), marking the directorial debut of Sean Wang, which world premiered at Sundance 2024, Pharrell Williams’ unconventional LEGO biopic Piece by Piece (October 11), directed by Morgan Neville, and Edward Berger’s anticipated awards prospect Conclave (November 1).

With the horror remake's release date drawing nearer, a new Nosferatu trailer has been unveiled. The upcoming film, written and directed by Robert Eggers (known for The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman), is a remake of the 1922 German silent film, which itself was an unauthorized and unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. The remake follows a similar story involving a tormented young woman and a terrifying vampire infatuated with her, with Nosferatu's cast including Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe.

In honor of the start of the Halloween season, Focus Features has released a new Nosferatu trailer. The footage offers a deeper look at Robert Eggers' highly anticipated horror remake, which features a star-studded cast including the likes of Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp and Willem Dafoe. The trailer also finally unveils the best look yet at Bill Skarsgård's titular vampire, revealing more of his latest haunting transformation for the horror genre. Check out the trailer below:

Everything Revealed By The New Nosferatu Trailer
How Does It Differ From The First Trailer?

Compared to the first Nosferatu trailer, which mostly omitted any plot or character details, the new trailer focuses much more on Lily-Rose Depp's Ellen Hutter, who was recently married to the real estate agent Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) and has been experiencing "spells" since childhood. Throughout the trailer, her soul is slowly seduced by Nosferatu, and she eventually succumbs to him. Despite unveiling the best look yet at Bill Skarsgård's titular vampire, the trailer once again keeps him concealed by only showing dark silhouettes and his shadow.

The new Nosferatu trailer focuses much more on this twisted connection between Count Orlok and Ellen Hutter. Early on, it's one of supernatural obsession as she senses his presence from afar, growing increasingly haunted by his influence. However, as shown in the trailer, Ellen is slowly seduced by him, urging him to "come to me" and at the end of the trailer, she succumbs to him, declaring, "I am ready." It's through this twisted, supernatural connection that director Robert Eggers creates a deep sense of dread and foreboding.

Similar to the one that was released this past summer, this is another effective trailer for Nosferatu. It continues to build on the supernatural and obsessive connection between Count Orlok and Ellen Hutter, creating a sense of psychological and atmospheric dread, while still not unveiling the full extent of Bill Skarsgård's titular vampire. It appears they are wisely saving the first full look for when Nosferatu arrives in theaters on December 25, allowing the fear and suspense to continue to grow in audiences' minds until then.

'Nosferatu' featuring Lily-Rose Depp promises gothic horror as extended trailer drops
Robert Eggers shared his terrifying take on “Nosferatu,” offering up the atmospheric first look at his remake of the famous vampire film to theater owners at CinemaCon this week. In the trailer, Lily-Rose Depp, playing a devout young woman, prays earnestly by candlelight. “Come to me, come to me, hear my call,” she intones before a hand reaches out to grab her neck.

And we’re off, with Eggers’ camera sweeping across wintery villages, dilapidated castles filled with secrets, and rats scurrying across cobblestones, portending some kind of primeval force that’s about to cast a shadow over everything (yes, there’s a literal shadow creeping across the screen at one point). The movie evokes the best of classic horror — it’s moody, unsettling and also eerily beautiful. But it’s not just artful. There’s also blood gushing from necks (it’s a vampire movie, after all) and gangs of stake-wielding villagers hoping to use folklore to battle these unseen forces.

“Does evil come from within us or from beyond?” Depp asks at another part of the trailer. Based on the footage, the answer in “Nosferatu” appears to be from both places.

In addition to Depp, the film stars Bill Skarsgård, trading in Pennywise’s clown makeup for Count Orlock’s razor-sharp fangs (he’s glimpsed from the back, hunching over in a bat-like crouch), as well as Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Emma Corrin. It also reunites Eggers with Willem Dafoe, who was featured so memorably as a crusty former sailor in “The Lighthouse” and who also appeared in the director’s previous film, “The Northman.” The viking epic starred Skarsgård’s brother, Alexander Skarsgård, as a Norse warrior with impressively low body fat and formidably chiseled abs.

“Nosferatu” is based on the 1922 German Expressionist masterpiece that was directed by F. W. Murnau — the making of that movie inspired 2000’s entirely fictitious “Shadow of the Vampire,” which, wait for it, starred Dafoe in an Oscar-nominated turn as a real-life bloodsucker enlisted to play the role of Orlock. He plays a vampire killer, here. “Nosferatu” was also remade in 1979 by Werner Herzog as “Nosferatu the Vampyre,” featuring his frequent collaborator Klaus Kinski, chewing scenery, nubile necks and anything in sight as the titular vampire. Isabelle Adjani and Bruno Ganz co-starred in the film, which has become a cult favorite.

The footage was shared by Focus Features during its parent studio, Universal’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas. “Nosferatu” will hit theaters on Dec. 25, 2024, because nothing gets moviegoers in the holiday spirit like watching a vampire try to satiate its blood lust. Eggers also directed 2015’s “The Witch,” an atmospheric horror hit that was set in 1630s New England.

Bill Skarsgård is bringing the undead blood-sucking lore back to life.

Skarsgård leads Robert Eggers‘ highly-anticipated vampire horror film “Nosferatu,” with “The Crow” actor playing the sinister Count Orlok. Eggers writes and directs the reimagining of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 film, which was later remade by Werner Herzog in 1979.

“Nosferatu” stars Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, a woman whose soul is seduced by the Count (Skarsgård) while her husband Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) fights to save her. The official description for “Nosferatu” reads: “Robert Eggers’ ‘Nosferatu’ is a Gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.”

Longtime Eggers collaborator Anya Taylor-Joy was originally cast in the Ellen Hutter role in 2016. Taylor-Joy exited the project due to scheduling conflicts. Harry Styles was also attached at one point for the part of Thomas Hutter. Eggers previously told IndieWire that the film had “fallen apart twice” before going into production. The COVID-19 pandemic also pushed “Nosferatu” back until after Eggers’ “The Northman” was completed.

Eggers serves as a producer alongside “The Witch” and “The Lighthouse” producer Chris Columbus, plus Eleanor Columbus, Jeff Robinov, and John Graham.

“Nosferatu” was shot on film and marks Eggers’ latest collaboration with Focus Features after his 2022 Viking epic “The Northman.” “I do think that there hasn’t been an old-school Gothic movie that’s actually scary in a while,” Eggers told Empire magazine. “And I think that the majority of audiences will find this one to be the case.”

Eggers added that “The Idol” breakout Depp is “absolutely phenomenal” in the film and Skarsgård fully transformed into the blood-sucking legend.

Skarsgård told Esquire that the titular role “took its toll” on him. “It was like conjuring pure evil,” the actor said. “It took a while for me to shake off the demon that had been conjured inside of me. It’s playing with a sexual fetish about the power of the monster and what that appeal has to you. Hopefully you’ll get a little bit attracted by it and disgusted by your attraction at the same time.”

“Nosferatu” will be released in theaters on Wednesday, December 25 from Focus Features. Check out the teaser below.

Synopsis
Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.

“I’ll say that Bill has so transformed, I’m fearful that he might not get the credit that he deserves because he’s just… he’s not there,” said director Robert Eggers on Bill Skarsgård’s performance as the vampire in an interview with Empire. “He felt like honoring who had come before him. It’s all very subtle – But I think the main thing is that he’s even more a folk vampire. In my opinion he looks like a dead Transylvanian nobleman, and in a way that we’ve never actually seen what an actual dead Transylvanian nobleman would look like and be dressed like.”

After transporting audiences to the woods of 17th-century New England in The Witch, a windswept island in the 1890s in The Lighthouse, and the rolling hills of 10th-century Iceland in The Northman, Robert Eggers is heading to Transylvania for his latest atmospheric chiller: Nosferatu, a gothic horror inspired by FW Murnau’s silent German Expressionist classic of the same name about a vampire who travels to Germany in pursuit of a beautiful young woman. Best of all, its cast is to die for.

The 1922 film opens in the fictional 19th-century German town of Wisborg, where the menacing estate agent Knock is preparing to send an employee, Thomas Hutter, to meet a beguiling new client who lives in a castle deep in the Transylvanian mountains. Upon arrival, Hutter is intrigued and then frightened by Count Orlok’s behaviour: he sleeps by day in a coffin; tries to suck Hutter’s blood after he accidentally cuts his finger; and then catches sight of a photograph of Hutter’s wife, Ellen, with whom he becomes obsessed. Orlok then sails to Wisborg to stalk her, and leaves a trail of destruction in his wake.

Given that Eggers is both penning and directing the retelling, it’s safe to assume that there’ll be several twists that deviate from the source material, though – considering the auteur’s distinctive, hallucinatory visual style – the imagery in the new release should be just as striking as that in the original. A case in point? The first still, which shows Depp’s Ellen Hutter gasping, with tears in her eyes, as the shadow of a monstrous hand covers her face. More haunting images followed soon after, as did two harrowing trailers.
