"She's not who you think she is!" She's a killer! But a righteous killer. Sky TV / Starz have both revealed the official trailer for a dark comedy series called Sweetpea, ready to watch starting in October coming up this fall. "The girl everyone overlooks might just be able to get away with murder." It's adapted from the book of the same name written by CJ Skuse, the first in a series of books about a sweet young woman who starts killing people. The TV series is described as "a deviously twisted coming-of-'rage' story." Ella Purnell (from Yellowjackets, Sweetbitter, and the recent Fallout series) who also serves as executive producer, stars as Rhiannon, a quiet wallflower who develops a vengeful and intoxicatingly liberating taste for murder. The series cast includes Nicôle Lecky, Jon Pointing, Calam Lynch, Leah Harvey, Jeremy Swift, Dustin Demri-Burns, and Luke McGibney. This series looks extremely cathartic, an outburst of intense emotion from all the women who are tired of all the bullshit. Rage on! Looks damn good! Purnell on a roll this year.

Here are both the US & UK trailers (+ a poster) for Sky TV's series Sweetpea, direct from YouTube:

Rhiannon Lewis (Purnell) doesn’t make much of an impression – people walk past her in the street without a second glance. She’s continually overlooked for a promotion at work, the guy she likes won’t commit, and her dad is really, really sick. Then everything in her life turns upside down. Rhiannon is pushed over the edge and loses control. Suddenly the wallflower is gone, and in its place is a young woman capable of anything… Rhiannon’s life transforms as she steps into a new, intoxicating power, but can she keep her killer secret? Sweetpea is a series created by English writer Kirstie Swain, also a writer on the TV series "EastEnders", "Holby City", "Pure", and "Run" previously. Adapted from the book of the same name written by CJ Skuse. With writing by Kirstie Swain, Krissie Ducker, Laura Jayne Tunbridge, & Selina Lim. And with episodes directed by Ella Jones (director many shorts + episodes of "Back to Life" and "The Baby"). Made by See-Saw Films and Sky Studios. Executive produced by Patrick Walters, Helen Gregory, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Ella Jones, Kirstie Swain, Ella Purnell, Manpreet Dosanjh. Sky will debut Sweetpea streaming on Sky and NOW in the UK, and Starz in the US, starting October 10th, 2024 this fall. Who wants to watch?
Ella Purnell starts a dark descent into serial killer life in the first trailer for Sweetpea. Purnell has now featured in the likes of Yellowjackets (2021-) and Army of the Dead (2021), most recently appearing in Prime Video's hit series, Fallout (2024-). Now, she's set to headline Sweetpea, a darkly comic tale about Purnell's Rhiannon Lewis, an overlooked girl who attempts to get away with murder. The show hails from creator Kirstie Swain and is based on the 2017 book of the same name by CJ Skuse.

Starz now shares the first trailer for Sweetpea, teasing the show's darkly comedic but violent tone. The footage reveals that Rhiannon struggles in life professionally and romantically, ignored and unappreciated by those around her. Rhiannon seemingly then decides to start killing those who have wronged her, setting her sights on Jessye Romeo's Anni, a real estate agent, as Leah Harvey's Marina, a police officer, starts closing in. The trailer also confirms that the miniseries will premiere on October 10, 2024. Check it out below:

Other actors set to appear in Sweetpea include: Calam Lynch, Nicôle Lecky, Tim Samuels, Dino Kelly, Lucy Heath, Elliot Cable, Jessica Brindle, Alexander Bellinfantie, and Luke McGibney.

What Ella Purnell Leading The Cast Means For Sweetpea
How The Starz Show Will Be Different From Fallout

Though Purnell's role in Yellowjackets has also been met with praise, she rocketed to a new level of fame with the release of Fallout earlier this year, in which she plays a sheltered vault-dweller venturing out into an apocalyptic landscape. Reviews were glowing from audiences and critics alike, and the show was a major viewership hit, with Fallout season 2 now confirmed to be on the way.

Ella Purnell is one of the most promising young talents currently in Hollywood with major hits like Yellowjackets and Fallout under her belt.

Purnell's role in Fallout is good news for Sweetpea, as she could now be enough of a draw on her own to get people to watch the show. The trailer reveals that the Starz series will be far smaller in scale and scope, but Purnell looks to play an even more prominent role in this series than she does in the Prime Video one. Sweetpea, in some ways, could end up allowing Purnell to show off greater range as an actor, as it's seemingly set to explore Rhiannon's inner life and struggles in a major way without any sci-fi world-building obligations.

Purnell has also had roles in projects like Star Trek: Prodigy (2021-2024), Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children (2016), and Never Let Me Go (2010).

Our Take On The Sweetpea Trailer
Why The Starz Show Is One To Look Forward To
Ella Purnell as Rhiannon Lewis standing in a club in Sweetpea
Purnell has proven herself a captivating actor in recent years, and Sweetpea has the added benefit of having Slow Horses (2022-) and Heartstopper (2022-) producers on board, two shows that have been critically-acclaimed throughout their respective runs. Sweetpea also looks to have tonal similarities to The End of the F***ing World (2017), another darkly comedic British thriller about anguished young people turning to violence, which was a show that I particularly enjoyed.

Purnell's roles in Yellowjackets and Fallout see her nailing both powerful dramatic moments as well as moments of comedy, and Sweetpea certainly looks to feature plenty of both. It remains to be seen how Sweetpea will fare with audiences and critics, but it has the makings of a fun and perhaps surprisingly violent ride.
Ella Purnell plays a wallflower-turned-murderer in the official trailer for Sky and Starz‘s thriller series “Sweetpea.”

The “Yellowjackets” and “Fallout” breakout stars as Rhiannon Lewis, a young woman who doesn’t particularly make an impression, in the six-part show based on C.J. Skuse’s novel of the same name.

“People walk past her in the street without a second glance. She’s continually overlooked for a promotion at work, the guy she likes won’t commit, and her dad is really, really sick. So far, so shit,” the show’s official synopis reads. “Then everything in her life is turned upside down, and Rhiannon is pushed over the edge. She snaps. Suddenly the wallflower is gone, and in its place is a young woman capable of anything… Rhiannon’s life transforms as she steps into a new, intoxicating power, but can she keep her killer secret?”

Ella Purnell, Sky, Starz, Sweetpea
Starz has some killer news for its subscribers as Sweetpea has officially announced an arrival date of Thursday, October 10. To make things even better, the Ella Purnell-led series has also dropped a brand-new trailer that teases the series adaptation of the celebrated CJ Skuse-penned book of the same name. Over six episodes, audiences will get chummy with Purnell’s latest character, Rhiannon Lewis, an introverted young woman with a dark secret. While she may just seem like the quiet girl in town, Rhiannon is the kind of person you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley as she’s growing into a new phase that sees her obsessed with killing. Dubbed a “coming of rage” story, Sweetpea is all about Rhiannon’s journey to find her strength and voice — just in a more interesting way with plenty of blood and guts.

Rhiannon is making a list and checking it twice in the fresh trailer for Sweetpea. From the supermarket clerk to her boss, Rhiannon jots down the names of everyone who makes her feel invisible and insignificant. And we probably don’t have to tell you, but when she snaps, these folks will be the first to go. Think of it as a parallel to Arya Stark’s (Maisie Williams) list of names in Game of Thrones, except Rhiannon will use her real face to stare down her victims before making her big move. Gaining confidence every step of the way, even the knowledge that the police are on her trail doesn’t slow Rhiannon down in the latest trailer for Sweetpea.

Meet the Cast of Your New Dark Comedy Obsession

Joining Purnell, whose star has been on the rise lately with notable roles in other shows like Yellowjackets, Fallout, and Star Trek: Prodigy, Starz’s latest series will also feature performances from Nicôle Lecky (Sense8), Jon Pointing (Big Boys), Calam Lynch (Bridgerton), Leah Harvey (Foundation), Jeremy Swift (Ted Lasso) and Dustin Demri-Burns (Slow Horses).

Starz has been knocking it out of the park this year with a handful of new and returning productions that have been bringing in subscribers in droves. Fans of the beloved series Outlander have been counting down the days until the show’s grandiose finale on November 22, while Shailene Woodley (Big Little Lies) and a powerful cast of actresses recently unveiled their new series, Three Women. And then there’s the ever-successful Samantha Morton (The Walking Dead)-led historical drama, The Serpent Queen, which just rounded out its second season at the end of August.

This has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career so far.”

Based on 2017 book of the same name by CJ Skuse, the series was adapted for television by Kirstie Swain (Run, Pure), who also serves as an executive producer. It’s directed by Ella Jones (The Baby, Back To Life), who holds an executive producer role as well. The show is a collaboration between See-Saw Films, fanboy, and Sky Studios.
