Recovery Efforts and Challenges in the Aftermath of Hurricane Helene
Field Report from Bohannan McKenzie 10–15–24

Bohannan and a Army Sgt
Pastor Ronnie Harris of Chestnut Hill Baptist Church reported significant losses following Hurricane Helene, including the tragic death of 13 members of his congregation. Only two families from the church still have their homes. Similarly, Broad River Baptist Church, which lies at a key junction between multiple communities, was severely impacted. Although the loss of life was lower, nearly every member has lost their home, and most have also lost their vehicles.

Efforts are underway to establish a fuel depot at Broad River Baptist Church to aid recovery. The Army, despite limited resources, has been instrumental in these efforts. Soldiers have had to borrow fuel from Bohannan’s supply on multiple occasions to continue their work. The fuel depot, funded by Bohannan’s team and those who have donated, will help supply critical resources to both the Army and the community, improving the ability to transport fuel and supplies to remote areas.

However, there have been challenges with law enforcement brought in by FEMA. Outside police departments have been blocking roads that were recently cleared, restricting access to vital areas. The Army is currently working to secure official documentation that would allow continued access to these roads. Without this access, it would be difficult to get necessary equipment and personnel into the affected regions.

The local sheriff’s department is aware of the situation and has received additional reports of conflict with these outside law enforcement agencies. The sheriff has offered support, stating that deputies will intervene if necessary to ensure that recovery efforts are not obstructed.
Establishing the fuel depot and coordinating these efforts remains a priority as the region continues to recover.
