With Mareeba Shire Council receiving another $200,000 in grant money, after the $150,000 they said they had back in May 2022 'disappeared', we are documenting the current poor state of these garden beds so we can see EXACTLY what they do with this money.
We don't know what garden beds are to be included in this Coondoo Street Replanting Project but these along Thongon Street are in such a poor state we think they need to be included in the project too.
This garden bed is on one corner of the busiest intersection in Kuranda beside the Kuranda Arts Co-op and look at it, it's one of the first the 100,000's of visitors to Kuranda see upon their arrival in the village.
As you can see, the bed itself is like all the others - rubbish everywhere, exposed broken sprinkler systems, full of weeds or nothing, with rather old, large trees/plants in the majority of them and unmulched for years in many cases.
We're not sure who planted the bromeliads over the years but they're all growing well - maybe some need to be moved to fill out some of the other garden beds. It wouldn't hurt to have some different varieties thrown into the mix as well - easy to maintain and grow and there are many different varieties to consider all with unique flowers...I have many in my own garden.
Each morning a Council employee needs to be responsible for going around and tidying up our garden beds - removing the 'dead wood' and rubbish that seems to lie around for weeks before being cleared up and taken away.
A Deed of Agreement with Queensland Government is being developed. Works to commence once the agreement is signed.
