"All hail the Prince of Darkness!" Peacock has revealed the full trailer for the new horror series streaming in October called Hysteria, featuring the one-and-only Bruce Campbell. As usual, the streaming services are trying to capitalize on the horror season with some new offerings. Hysteria follows a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts who use the town's sudden interest/fear in the occult to start a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a strange series of events triggers a witch hunt leading right back to them. When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the "Satanic Panic" of the late 1980s, all of the townspeople get caught up in the hysteria and go after the wrong kids. The series stars Julie Bowen, Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia, Kezii Curtis, Nikki Hahn, Anna Camp, Nolan North, with Garret Dillahunt as The Reverend, and Bruce Campbell as Chief Dandridge. There's also this doc film about the Satanic Panic called Satan Wants You to check out as well. This looks both funny and scary - not an easy thing to pull off.

Here's the full official trailer (+ poster) for Peacock's horror series Hysteria!, direct from YouTube:

Julie Bowen is going back to the ’80s to play another suburban mom in Peacock‘s Hysteria!… but she’s got a new supernatural foe this time.

The streamer on Thursday released a full trailer for its upcoming pop-horror series, which stars Bowen (Modern Family) as the mother of a teenage boy who tries to use a recent missing-persons case to his advantage.

After the mysterious disappearance of a suburban town’s local varsity quarterback, a “struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band,” according to the official description. That is, “until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported ‘supernatural activity’ triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.”

Along with Bowen, Hysteria!‘s cast includes Anna Camp (The Good Wife), Emjay Anthony (Physical), Chiara Aurelia (Cruel Summer), Kezii Curtis (Insecure) and Nikki Hahn (American Housewife), with “special guest star” Bruce Campbell (Ash vs. Evil Dead). Matthew Scott Kaine (Stitchers) and David A. Goodman (The Orville) serve as writers and executive producers.

Peacock previously announced that Hysteria! will premiere Friday, Oct. 18, with all eight episodes. The series premiere also airs that day on USA Network and Syfy, and USA Network will air subsequent episodes weekly after that.

The ‘80s vibes are alive in the official trailer for Peacock’s upcoming horror series, Hysteria! Blending slasher flicks with the Satanic Panic and tossing in horror icon Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead) for good measure, the latest look covers all the bases of a solid horror comedy but in episodic form. Joining Campbell in the production’s leading ensemble is a familiar lineup of the industry’s biggest faces, including Julie Bowen (Modern Family), Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect), and Chiara Aurelia (Cruel Intentions).

A high school football player has gone missing and the town of Happy Hollow is at its wits’ end in the opening sequences of the new trailer for Hysteria! Having gone unseen and unnoticed his entire life, teenager Dylan Campbell (Emjay Anthony) laments to his bandmates and friends about the town’s obsession with the missing student. Spotting an opportunity to capitalize on the tragedy, Dylan suggests that they lean into the Satanic aspect of the possible murder case to bring in a crowd to their next show. And, while it works and their popularity skyrockets, the friends quickly learn that they might be covering up something incredibly sinister lurking within the town.

Filling out the rest of the title’s ensemble cast is a lineup that includes Kezii Curtis (Charm City Kings), Nikki Hahn (Adventures in Babysitting), Garret Dillahunt (Raising Hope), Nolan North (Uncharted), Elijah Richardson (King Jack), Milly Shapiro (Hereditary), Allison Scagliotti (Warehouse 13) and Jessica Treska (Sharp Objects). John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Dungeons & Dragons) serve as executive producers alongside Good Fear Content’s Chris Bender and Jake Weiner. Matthew Scott Kane and David A. Goodman (The Orville) also executive produced and served as co-scribes on the project.

Peacock’s Spooky Scary Halloween Season

Along with the October 18 arrival of Hysteria! Peacock is set to be the premiere destination for all things Halloween. The streamer is also preparing to welcome another haunting series, Teacup, which is backed by James Wan’s production company, Atomic Monster. Aside from the new shows, audiences can head over to the platform to stream countless genre flicks, including Queen of the Damned, Sleepy Hollow, and a grab bag of Hellraiser movies.

Check out the new trailer for Hysteria! above, and tune into Peacock on October 18 for the entire first season. If streaming isn’t your jam, the first episode will also be available on USA Network and Syfy on October 18, with the former airing new episodes every Friday.

Julie Bowen is back on TV, but she is far from the feel-good nature of “Modern Family.”

The “Happy Gilmore” actress leads upcoming Peacock series “Hysteria!,” which is set during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s. In the trailer, Bowen is shown as a ’80s housewife who is rocking out with her Walkman…until her microwave seems to become possessed by a “Ghostbusters”-esque demon.

The official synopsis reads: “When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize that they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band. This is until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported ‘supernatural activity’ triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.”

“Evil Dead” actor Bruce Campbell and “Pitch Perfect” alum Anna Camp co-star in the music-centric series. Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia, Kezii Curtis, Nikki Hahn, Garret Dillahunt, Nolan North, Elijah Richardson, Milly Shapiro, Allison Scagliotti, and Jessica Treska round out the cast.

“Hysteria!” is written and executive produced by Matthew Scott Kane and David A. Goodman. John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein, Chris Bender, and Jake Weiner also executive produce, with Scott Stoops as the supervising producer. Jordan Vogt-Roberts directs the first and last episodes of the eight-episode season; he also executive produces.

Writers Kane and Goodman issued a joint statement upon the announcement of the series.

“‘What are those kids up to? Whatever it is, it can’t be good.’ That fear haunts every generation,” the statement reads. “Children of the Atomic Age went on to terrifying their families by turning on, tuning in and dropping out in the sixties. Those same ‘free spirits’ went on to vote for Reagan and called for censorship of the ‘obscene’ and ‘satanic’ heavy metal bands their own kids worshiped. Now, those kids are adults who rail against pronouns, TikTok, and a movie about Barbie. The cycle doesn’t end. And it’s hard to escape the feeling that someone, or something, is sitting by watching it all, and laughing.”

The statement continues, “‘Hysteria!’ is about both sides of that generational fear. It’s about the thrills of being young, rebellious in spirit and aspirational at heart – and the horrors of growing up and realizing that the world you thought you knew has shifted beneath your feet. Our hope is that parents and children (of the appropriate age, of course) can enjoy the chills, the laughs, the music, and the heart of ‘Hysteria!’ together. Growing up is scary. So is parenting.”

“Hysteria!” premieres October 18 on Peacock. USA Network and SYFY will simulcast the first episode on October 18 with USA Network airing new episodes each Friday. Check out the trailer below.

The horror comedy series premieres on October 18 on Peacock, USA Network, and SYFY.
The show follows a group of outcasts who capitalize on a disappearance during the 1980s satanic panic.
The teaser trailer for Hysteria! previews Modern Family alum Julie Bowen and Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell's upcoming horror comedy series. Since the end of her time as Claire Dunphy on Modern Family, Bowen has taken to genre fare. She starred in the romcom Mixtape, which has a distinct attachment to past decades, in addition to the slasher Totally Killer. Now in just a matter of weeks, Bowen will take on another genre staple: satanic panic. Campbell is known for his role in the Evil Dead series, which deals in the occult and his latest series is a return to that.

Peacock has now released the teaser trailer for Hysteria!, which debuts all eight episodes on Friday, October 18.

Hysteria! will also premiere on the USA Network and SYFY on the same date, with the USA Network then airing new episodes each Friday.

What Happens In The Hysteria! Teaser Trailer?
A Hit Song Is Interrupted
Julie Bowen in the Hysteria trailer
The minute-long teaser begins with the hallmarks of a seemingly safe American town, with everybody being friendly and waving to one another. Bowen's character is in the kitchen. She's listening to "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" by Belinda Carlisle, a song which received a spotlight focus in the standout Black Mirror episode "San Junipero." When the lights flicker and her surroundings begin to rattle, Bowen's character is briefly rattled. The character attempts to collect herself, but she's shaken again when her reflection is revealed to be something demonic.

What Is Hysteria! About?

The official synopsis for Hysteria!, provided by Peacock and included below, teases that the eight-episode series begins with a disappearance. Although some of the characters look to take advantage of this, the situation gets far more serious and the 1980s-set horror comedy takes some dangerous twists and turns that do not bode well for the people involved:

When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported “supernatural activity” triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.

Along with Bowen and Campbell, the Hysteria! cast includes Anna Camp, Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia, Kezii Curtis, and Nikki Hahn. Recurring guests, meanwhile, are Garret Dillahunt, Nolan North, Elijah Richardson, Milly Shapiro, Allison Scagliotti, and Jessica Treska. Behind the camera, the show is written and executive produced by Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David A. Goodman, who previously worked on The Orville.

A new TV series set in the fictional Michigan town of Happy Hallow unfolds during the so-called satanic panic of the late 1980s with what promises to be thrills and chills.

“Hysteria!,” which premieres Oct. 18 on Peacock, follows what happens when a high school varsity quarterback disappears and a heavy metal band made up of outcast students tries to use the era’s fears of the occult to increase the group's visibility as a so-called satanic metal band.

An image from "Hysteria!," an upcoming series set in a fictional Michigan town that will stream on Peacock.
Then a string of murders, kidnappings and rumored otherworldly occurrences ends up drawing them into what the streaming platform calls “a leather-studded witch hunt."

Described by Peacock as a drama with chills, laughs and music for parents and children of a suitable age to enjoy together, “Hysteria!” focuses on generational fear. “It’s about the thrills of being young, rebellious in spirit and aspirational at heart — and the horrors of growing up and realizing that the world you thought you knew has shifted beneath your feet," said the streaming site in a news announcement.

The show stars Julie Bowen (ABC's “Modern Family”), Anna Camp ("Pitch Perfect"), Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia, Kezii Curtis and Nikki Hahn. Recurring guest stars include metro Detroit’s own Bruce Campbell, aka the Sam Raimi pal who is an icon of the “Evil Dead” franchise, and Garret Dillahunt (HBO's "Deadwood," Fox's "Raising Hope").

A teaser trailer arrived last week that depicts Bowen experiencing a creepy moment in her kitchen as Belinda Carlisle's 1987 hit "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" plays in the background.

Besides the presence of Campbell and the Happy Hallow location, “Hysteria!” has strong ties to Michigan through its makers. Series creator, executive producer and showrunner Matthew Kane Scott hails from Michigan, says a Peacock representative.

In 2019, Kane’s script for “Hysteria!” won both hourlong pilot and overall script awards from the Blue List, a competition held by the University of Michigan Entertainment Coalition and the University of Michigan Club of Los Angeles. The awards came with a script reading hosted by the West Coast U-M alumni networks.

Kane has worked on the production staffs of the 2019 horror film “Annabelle Comes Home” and TV shows including “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “American Horror Story.” His entry on a media production job site describes him as a 2012 University of Michigan graduate who earned a bachelor's degree in screen arts and culture.

Another Michigan tie is Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who directed two episodes of “Hysteria!” and is also among the executive producers. Vogt-Roberts, who helmed 2017’s “Kong: Skull Island,” grew up in Royal Oak. He peppered “Kong: Skull Island” with numerous nods to Detroit.

Metro Detroit's own Bruce Campbell in a scene from the upcoming Peacock series, "Hysteria!"
The satanic panic that provides the time frame of "Hysteria!" preoccupied America in the 1980s with its unfounded claims of evil cults abusing children. It resulted in widespread media coverage, official investigations and untold trauma on those caught up in the urban legend.

Those accusations of more than 40 years ago are “eerily similar” to the current extreme-right QAnon conspiracy theories, according to a 2021 NPR report. It cited Grand Valley State University professor emeritus Mary de Young, who has extensively researched the satanic panic, as thinking the first time she heard about QAnon: "Here we go again."
