The The were one of the more original and idiosyncratic bands to come out of the post-punk scene of the 1970s and 80s. Essentially it was a one-man-band, that man being Matt Johnson. Of working class London origins, Johnson steered his project through the politically charged waters of the 1980s music scene. Although his often gloomy social commentary was not everyone's tastes, the band had a firm cult following.
