JOKER 2: What Was Todd Phillips Thinking?

SPOILERS AHEAD!
I'm not sure about you, but this movie feels like a step back from what was a well-executed character piece in the original Joker film. If Todd Phillips's recent comments had come after the first movie, fans would have perceived Joker 2 from a very different perspective.
