Apatros Review Ep-0109: Scorcher [2002]
AR-0109: One rather interestingly unusual example of Climate Cult hysteria, although not in the conventional sense, this early-2000s DTV [direct-to-video] disaster actioner has those no goodniks in the CCP detonate a number of nukes along the edge of their tectonic plates, causing the plate to move so far out of whack that it risks boosting the volcanic activity to a point that once the Earth's temperature gets past a certain point, the Earth will be cooked...
...pretty much the same scientifically implausible bullhitsa the Climate Cult believe in, except...
...this time there is a guaranteed instant cure to this problem, and you're going to love this one. Essentially we need to push the tectonic movement back in the proper direction by detonating our own nukes in the exact counterpoint to the CCP nuke blasts - which means that the nukes must be placed in downtown Los Angeles.
[That's something the young socialists in Commiefornia are going to love...]
A special ops team led by the soldier who tried to hit on the President's wife ["I was young and she was hot"] [the POTUS is played by Rutger Hauer] heads into a now-evacuated LA to plant the nukes, although the father-daughter experts tagging along don't seem to agree that TWO nukes are needed instead of one, while the teenage daughter of that leader of the special ops squad is actually still in the target zone, having narrowly escaped a tunnel fire and now needs to find a way to get to her dad in time...
Okay, so the central premise is a pile of thoroughly unscientific junk science bullhitsa that everyone outside of the Climate Cult would not take seriously, this concept hurting the film by a long shot, but when you take it as a straightforward DTV B-grade action thriller with some usual disaster movie plotting, it works surprisingly enough, plus the acting is pretty good too. Not a good movie, but nowhere near worthless. Bad Movie Masochists will enjoy this one, especially those who fantasize about deploying some "Red Dust" on the young Marxists in Commiefornia...
My Grade: D+ [Disappointing]

"Red Dust" is a Killzone reference, BTW. I'll let you look that one up... And hope the Helghast don't get hold of one any earlier than 2357AD...
