Exploring Tenja
Situated in the Drava-Danube plain, Tenja boasts a rich historical tapestry. First mentioned between 1443 and 1469 as a noble estate of Korođ, the village experienced significant changes over the centuries. During the Turkish occupation around 1526, Tenja was nearly abandoned but was later resettled after the defeat of the Ottomans in 1683, attracting Orthodox families followed by Catholic settlers.

By the late 19th century, Tenja had become an independent municipality within the Osijek district. The village saw significant demographic growth and development through agrarian reforms and the impact of two world wars.

Cultural and Historical Highlights
The Orthodox community established their parish in 1761 with a church dedicated to the Transfer of the Relics of St. Nicholas. The Catholic community, initially served by Franciscan friars from Osijek, built a wooden chapel dedicated to St. Anne in 1754, and a Catholic parish was officially established in 1975.

Tenja also played a significant role during the Croatian War of Independence. The southern part of the village was a center of rebellion but was reintegrated peacefully into Croatia’s constitutional order. In September 2015, a memorial was unveiled at Betin Dvor near Tenja to honor the victims of Greater Serbian aggression, commemorating 12 Croatian defenders and civilians executed in 1991.
