The NEXRAD radar system — those big white balls sitting atop high towers all over the country — is operated by the National Weather Service (NWS), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the U.S. Air Force.

The official purpose of NEXRAD is to measure:

• wind speed and direction
• wind shear and gust fronts
• storms
• potential flooding or dangerous hail

Now, consider the saying, “If you can measure it, you can manage it.” And watch for the blue dots on the frequency recording during Hurricane Helene.
