OZFest Morning Mission Replay: Hurricane Helene

We recognize that Helene is an unprecedented tragedy, Black Mountain, Chimney Rock, Marshall and the other regions of Appalachia have been decimated by a freakish hurricane which dropped over 31 inches of rain in a mountain region. Naturally they are not prepared for a flood based disaster, the surge of flood waters carved away their towns.

What is more disastrous is the complete lack of response by the agencies that we have vested with power and funds to the tune of billions. We have a governor in North Carolina who could not mobilize the National Guard until 3 days after the storm hit the region. We have a governor who could not mobilize the linemen ahead of time to mitigate the storm damage, as has been the standing procedure for decades.

On this episode, aired on October 1st 2024, we were joined by Pam whose company provides hurricane relief in North Carolina, where she relayed the lack of basic preparation that will contribute to this disaster.

On this next replay of "Best Laid Plans of FEMA and the Elite" that aired on October 7th, 2024, Pam from North Carolina returned to give an update on the conditions in Boone, Chimney Rock and other regions of Appalachia. She explained that operations entered into what is called the Recovery Phase. What is recovery? Sadly it means that the time to perform rescue has unfortunately passed, and the missing are now considered fatalities.

Zee and Pam also dissected the change in mission scope for FEMA. Did the emphasis on climate change and climate resiliency inappropriately divert attention to the original mission for FEMA, and has that made the organization ineffective? You must ask yourself if FEMA had remained true to its original charter, would have a week transpired with no effective action being taken to rescue victims of Hurricane Helena?
