Lotus Flower Album: The King of Limbs (2011)
by Radiohead
According to Q magazine April 2008, I Might Be Wrong is about a crisis point in Thom Yorke's life. The singer's troubles were partly caused by the baggage of past relationships and coincided with an incident when Yorke was strolling on a beach, looked back, and spotted an apparition in his house.
In the Sophie Muller-directed video, Yorke and guitarist Jonny Greenwood perform I Might Be Wrong in a parking garage. Muller is known for working with the Eurythmics, No Doubt, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Sade and Garbage.
The King of Limbs is the eighth studio album by English alternative rock band Radiohead. Produced by Nigel Godrich, it was initially released as a download in MP3 and WAV formats, followed by a physical CD a month later. "Lotus Flower" was chosen by the group as the first single from the album. It was made available on February 18, 2011 when Radiohead's official blog published the song with an accompanying video, followed by a post announcing the release of the album.
Lotus Flower was debuted by Thom Yorke at a warm-up show with his other band Atoms For Peace on October 2, 2009 at the Echoplex in Los Angeles. Radiohead first performed the track during a January 2010 Haiti benefit concert in Los Angeles.
The Lotus Flower (also known as Sacred Lotus) is an aquatic perennial, which is the national flower of both India and Vietnam. From ancient times it has been a divine symbol in Asian traditions representing the virtue of sexual purity and in the classical literature of many Asian cultures the lotus was often used in verse as an allegory for ideal feminine attributes. The flowers, seeds, roots and young leaves are all edible and under favorable circumstances its seeds may remain viable for many years. A 1300-yr-old lotus fruit, recovered from a dry lakebed in north-eastern China, is the oldest germinated and directly carbon-dated fruit known.
The album's title The King of Limbs refers to an oak tree in Wiltshire's Savernake Forest, which is thought to be 1,000-years-old. The tree is located 3 miles from Tottenham Court House, where Radiohead recorded part of their previous album, In Rainbows.
Lotus Flower's black and white music video shows a behatted Thom Yorke dancing and singing. It was produced and directed by Garth Jennings and choreographed by Wayne McGregor.
Yorke's unconventional moves in the music video for Lotus Flower inspired a series of dance dub videos that had him grooving to popular songs, including Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance," and Guns N' Roses' "Welcome To The Jungle."
Their original name was "On A Friday". They switched to Radiohead in 1989 because it was the name of a Talking Heads song.
They started playing together and writing songs in 1987. They waited until 1991 to sign a record deal and start recording because they wanted to finish college. Their first album came out in 1993.
Radiohead used the first "Active Buddy" computer program to promote their album Amnesiac. Called "Googly Minotaur," it was programed to chat with fans and answer questions about Radiohead. The program is an extension of the AOL Instant Messaging system.
All the members of Radiohead were students at Abingdon School (near Oxford). They all still live nearby.
Johnny is Colin's younger brother. When he started playing with the rest of the band, he was only 13.
Their 1997 album OK Computer was made in a manor near Bath owned by actress Jane Seymour (Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman).
Yorke was born with a paralyzed left eye. It has been partially corrected through various operations. Continuing with the "eye" theme, Johnny is colorblind.
