One person has died, and 23 others were rescued after being trapped underground at the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine in Cripple Creek, Colorado.

The incident occurred due to a mechanical failure in the mine’s elevator system, leaving 12 out-of-state tourists stuck for about six hours.

Eleven people were rescued earlier, and among those freed, two were children and four received treatment for minor injuries.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed relief at the successful rescues while extending condolences to the deceased’s family, CNN has reported.
