Newly released police body cam video shows a shootout between officers and a robbery suspect in North Portland last month. The suspect, 24-year-old Jesse West, survived after being shot and is now charged with attempted murder.

Body cam video shows Portland police approaching West in the area of Northeast 17th Avenue and Bryant Street. Officers from the specially trained Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) then try to box in the suspect's Subaru.

West tries to get away, but his car gets stuck.

"Put your hands up; you're under arrest!" an officer shouts.

West, under investigation for several violent crimes — including an armed carjacking-style robbery earlier in the day, police say — he refused to comply after repeated commands from officers.

"You're under arrest, Jesse, under arrest." Portland police, put your hands up, Jesse!" others call.

Seconds later, an officer fires three less-than-lethal rounds toward the suspect's car.

Then, a shootout, as police and the suspect trade gunfire.

West fired six rounds at police, according to investigators. In exchange, three different officers fired a total of 30 rounds, said police, hitting West.

A wounded West then cooperated with police, according to investigators, and was sent to the hospital. In his car, investigators found a 9-millimeter handgun and shell casings, according to prosecutors.

No officers were injured.

On Wednesday, West appeared in court, using a wheelchair and pleaded not guilty to two counts of attempted murder.
