What Does God Say About Halloween?

October is a month dominated by the influences of Halloween with such things as ghosts, witches, vampires, skeletons, goblins, zombies, haunted houses, horror movies, and more. It is a celebration that is rooted in darkness, fear and death...all of which are the direct opposite of God who is the Author and Giver of light, peace and life.

Jesus testifies in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

In John 14:27, Jesus tells us, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

And we read in John 1:4-5, "In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."

The author of darkness, fear and death is satan. He is a thief who comes only to steal, kill and destroy as we read in John 10:10. YET, Jesus came so that we may have life. And in order to give us life, Jesus Christ died on the cross for us and was resurrected to overcome darkness and to have victory over death. Our Savior suffered to conquer ALL that lies at the very root of Halloween. This pagan holiday is a great dishonor to all that Christ did for us.

As followers of Christ, who is THE light of the world, we are to reflect Him and also be lights of the world as Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:14. In Ephesians 5:8, Paul tells us, "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light."

As lights in the world, we cannot have a relationship with darkness. We read in 2 Corinthians‬ ‭6:14‬, "What do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?"

Halloween is a darkness with which we have nothing in common. It is a spiritually dangerous path to have any degree of participation or support of Halloween as Apostle Paul teaches us in Ephesians‬ ‭4:27‬, ‭"do not give the devil a foothold".

We can certainly avoid the evil, dark side of Halloween and change the costumes, décor and parties to positive themes, but it doesn’t change the fact that it is still a celebration of Halloween – a day in which satan revels. No matter what we do or how we compromise, we cannot change the root of the day.

Apostle Paul teaches us in Romans‬ 12:2‬, ‭"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

Some Christians justify their participation by giving out tracts instead of candy. Some churches organize “trunk or treats” in their parking lots and share the gospel by giving away bracelets. The reasoning behind these actions is that the “light and truth of Christ is being given in the midst of darkness.” That is always great, however, we have 364 OTHER days of the year to do so.

What kind of message does it give outsiders when we participate in a day rooted in evil? Would we participate in a parade that promotes an ideology that goes against the ways of God? No, because being seen in such a parade would cause outsiders to assume that we support that cause or ideology. Apostle Paul teaches us in I Thessalonians 5:22 to “abstain from all appearances of evil.”

As children of light, let us remember to live as such and avoid supporting anything associated with darkness as we read in 1 Thessalonians 5:5-6,

"You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober."

Indeed, we do NOT belong to the darkness, instead, we BELONG to Christ, our great Savior, Lord and King. And as we read in Colossians 1:12-13, our loving Father has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and has brought us into the everlasting Kingdom of Light.
