The mystery of how Easter Island statues got to wear their distinctive 13 ton red hats have been solved by scientists. The South Pacific island is famous for over 900 giant statutes known as Easter Island statues known as moai made between the 13th and 16th centuries. The statues which can be up to 33 feet tall and weigh 81 tons are carved from volcanic tuff, from one quarry on the island which is 15 miles long and 7.6 miles wide at its widest. But the hats known as pukao are made of red scoria and came from a different quarry 7.5 miles away on the other side of the island.
