stealing a kill

This large male tiger just stole this kill from a mother tiger, as she was summoning her cubs to come feed. Competition for resources is very high among these predators, so leaving a kill unattended is done so at the risk of this happening.

Unlike lions, tigers hunt all by themselves. And unlike other solitary hunters like leopards and cheetahs, who's hunts take place in wide open savannahs, tigers have little choice but to enter dense forests, thick grasslands and swamps to look for food. It's no wonder that, with more places to hide, the prey they hunt have a very good chance of eluding this predator.

The average hunting success rate of a tiger is 1 out of 10. For every 10 times they go out to hunt, they come up empty 9 of those attempts. This is part of the reason that tigers rely so much on the art of the ambush. Sitting and waiting for something tasty to walk by is a much more efficient way to lose 90 out of 100 attempts than chasing after everything that moves.
