Zoe Saldana returns in tense 'Lioness Season 2' trailer
A new trailer for Lioness season 2 has been released, revealing what to expect from Zoe Saldaña's CIA officer Joe in the next chapter of Taylor Sheridan's spy thriller TV show. Lioness season 1 ended with the successful assassination of Asmar Ali Amrohi (Bassem Yousef), following Cruz Manuelos' (Laysla De Oliveira) infiltration of his home by befriending his daughter, Aaliyah (Stephanie Nur). While it was unclear where the story would go moving forward, the series did leave the door open for another operation regarding the titular CIA-based team.
Now, Paramount+ has released the first trailer for Lioness season 2, which teases more action and intrigue as the story continues. The trailer shows Joe interrogating a new operative about how much she loves her country, while out-of-context action sequences play throughout. These include US soldiers in gunfights and vehicle chases, including a car driving into a river and a helicopter taking off. Joe can also be seen going through multiple emotional moments as her job pushes her to the limit.
In addition to Saldaña's storyline, the trailer also hints at intrigue surrounding Kaitlyn (Nicole Kidman), whose house is seemingly broken into with an unknown body on the floor. Joe is also seen reckoning with her family, including kissing her husband, Neal (Dave Annable), and reassuring her daughter, Kate (Hannah Love Lanier). The trailer ends with the protagonist telling her new asset to try harder with her job, hinting at a new international operation she'll be in charge of overseeing. The trailer also contains a start date of October 27. Check out the trailer below:
Morgan Freeman's Secretary of State Edwin Mullins and Michael Kelly's CIA Deputy Director Byron Westfield also show up, although their role in season 2 remains unclear.
What Lioness' New Trailer Says About Season 2
The Show Promises Even More Suspense Than Before
Although exact plot details for Lioness season 2 are sparse, the trailer description confirms Joe will be hiring a new asset to deal with a threat that was previously unknown to the US Government. It also hints at a continued exploration of how her personal life with her family is impacted by everything she has to do for her job. This was highlighted in the trailer through interactions with Neal and Kate, including a brief scene of her husband throwing a phone to the floor out of frustration.

Taylor Sheridan's star-studded series Lioness features Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman, and Zoe Saldana yet still received poor reviews among critics.
Other characters are also likely to have their own unexpected events to deal with, such as Kyle (Thad Luckinbill), who was promoted to a series regular this season. As for the trailer, Kaitlyn seems like she'll have a threat potentially targeting her, possibly even harming her husband, Errol (Martin Donovan). Edwin and Byron also seem to be working on some kind of case together, with enough urgent factors for the CIA Deputy Director to be called while he's off the clock. Since season 1 had its own sprawling storyline, the same appears to be the case for its follow-up.
Our Take On Lioness Season 2
The New Episodes Aren't Pulling Any Punches
Zoe Saldaña as Joe in Lioness season 2
Since Lioness is teasing just as much action as the first season did, it's unsurprising for the trailer to showcase plenty of dramatic, intense moments. Given how unpredictable the story of season 1 became, we anticipate a very similar approach to season 2 based on the action and drama that have been shared so far. With the premiere a little over a month away, it should prove interesting to see how creator Taylor Sheridan continues the story into a new era.
Can a recently recruited operative help the Lioness program? The upcoming season of “Lioness” sees the team facing a mysterious threat. Their new member is tasked with a dangerous mission, as Joe (Zoe Saldaña), Kaitlyn (Nicole Kidman), and Byron (Michael Kelly) provide much-needed support. Meanwhile, Joe faces difficulties in colliding with her personal and professional interests.

Zoe Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira, Michael Kelly, Morgan Freeman, and Nicole Kidman once again star in the Paramount+ series. “The Umbrella Academy” actress Genesis Rodriguez joins the cast as Captain Josephina Carrillo. Saldaña and Kidman take on added duties, serving as executive producers alongside Taylor Sheridan, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin, Jill Wagner, David Lemanowicz, Geyer Kosinski, Michael Friedman, and Keith Cox.
The project hails from “Yellowstone” co-creator Sheridan, who also wrote 2015’s “Sicario.” Saldaña reflected on Sheridan’s influences on the acclaimed film “Lioness” during a Hollywood Reporter interview. “I do know that he has a great deal of admiration for the real work that gets done when we’re all sleeping, so he takes it upon himself to highlight this world,” the actress said.

After a debut season filled with high-stakes espionage and surprising twists, Paramount+'s Lioness is getting ready for to return — and this time with a new face joining the mix.
Genesis Rodriguez joins Zoe Saldaña, Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman in season 2 this fall as Captain Josephina Carillo, or “Josie,” a fierce and dedicated helicopter pilot.
Saldaña, who reprises her role as Joe, program director of the CIA’s Lioness program tasked with training, managing and leading the group’s female undercover operatives, exclusively tells PEOPLE the season will start with Joe taking some much-deserved time off, having prioritized her marriage to Neal (Dave Annable) and relationship with daughter Kate (Hannah Love Lanier).
"Joe is taking time off, which is what she wanted," Saldaña says. "She is spending time mending her marriage and rehabilitating her relationship with her daughter. She’s just spending time with her family... Joe and Neal are in a really good place at the start of the season."
In these exclusive first-look photos — especially the one below as well as the tense photo above with Kidman's Kaitlyn Meade — Joe may not be in a "really good place" for long.

Season 2 presents Joe with a new set of challenges, including a rough start with Josie. “It’s a strange relationship — there’s a lot of mistrust from the beginning,” Saldaña hints.
Still, collaborating with Rodriguez, 37, has been “breath of fresh air," Saldaña says. “She is sweet, kind, and so professional. When you speak to her, there's just this light to her spirit that makes everyone smile around her.”
“I've known Genesis for a long time,” Saldaña continues. “I am a fan of her work and most of all, my family and I have been a fan of her father’s [José Luis Rodriguez] music since birth. It's been an honor working with her.”

“All of us, our team, all of us are a family,” she continues, noting that the cast spends their days off together. “This is the dream job.”

On the other hand, Saldaña says Joe still has a great relationship and total trust with her boss Kaitlyn Meade (above, surely contemplating her next move), the CIA’s Senior Supervisor.
"There is absolute trust in Joe’s relationship with Kaitlyn. They very much have a role model, mentee-mentor kind of relationship. Joe has always looked up to Kaitlyn and Kaitlyn knows that there is nothing that she can ask of Joe that she won't deliver on," Saldaña shares. "Joe always demands excellence from herself and from her team because she regards Kaitlyn so highly and having her respect is very important to her because they’re very much Lionesses, both of them. In terms of driving missions, they believe in what they’re doing and believe in the Lioness program."

The spy drama’s cast — which also includes Freeman playing U.S. Secretary of State Edwin Mullins (above) and Michael Kelly as CIA Deputy Director Byron Westfield — and their crew went out of their way to make Rodriguez feel welcome.
“That happened from the beginning — during training and exercises and stunt training,” Saldaña recalls. “At rehearsals, Gen was just such a trooper, but this is a good crew where there are a whole bunch of good apples, and I have to say I feel really lucky, because the cast members that I've been working with on this show are just beautiful individuals. So obviously the same way they made me feel well really welcome, and I made them feel welcome, we did the same for Gen and that sort of took off from the beginning."

With the first season proving to be another big television hit for Taylor Sheridan, people are already beginning to wonder about Lioness season 2. The spy thriller stars Zoe Saldaña as a handler in a special CIA program that uses a female agent to go undercover and befriend the daughter of a suspected terrorist weapons supplier. The show looks at the behind-the-scenes decision-making within the operation as well as the intense danger it presents.
Like Tulsa King, Lioness is one of the few television programs Taylor Sheridan has created that isn't part of his expansive Yellowstone universe of shows. However, that is not to say that the show could not kick off its own universe. The title seems to suggest the possibility of other stories being told under the Special Ops umbrella. Whatever direction the possible Lioness season 2 takes will be a good indicator of the show's future — and there's definitely demand for the high-octane thriller to continue.

Lioness Season 2 Release Date Confirmed
Zoe Saldana is currently making waves for her performance in the much-buzzed-about Narco musical "Emilia Perez." While moviegoers might be surprised by her growing Oscar buzz, television fans -- especially Taylor Sheridan devotees -- know she has been delivering some of her best work as a no-nonsense special ops operative in the military action-thriller series "Lioness." A tough feat, especially since Saldana is sharing the screen with major heavy hitters like Oscar-winners Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman, and Emmy-nominee Michael Kelly.
"Lioness" returns for its second season in October. Inspired by a real-life U.S. military program, Saldana stars as "Joe," the station chief of the Lioness program. She is responsible for training, managing, and leading a team of female undercover operatives regularly tasked with some of the CIA's most dangerous missions. Saldana's Joe is currently mentoring the program's latest recruit, Marine Sergeant Cruz Manuelos (played by breakout Laysla De Oliveira), a rookie 'Lioness' operative eager to learn the ropes of undercover work.
The series, created by "Yellowstone" showrunner and "Sicario" writer Taylor Sheridan, also delves into Joe's domestic life as she struggles to balance her loyalties as an anti-terrorist operative with her responsibilities as a parent to a rebellious teenage daughter.
Morgan Freeman co-stars as U.S. Secretary of State Edwin Mullins, while Nicole Kidman takes on the role of Agent Kaitlyn Meade, the CIA director overseeing operations and working to disrupt state-sponsored terrorism around the world.
Michael Kelly (House of Cards, Jack Ryan) also co-stars as CIA Deputy Director Byron Westfield, with Dave Annable (Yellowstone) playing Saldana's surgeon husband, Neal, and Hannah Love Lanier (2024's Road House) as their teenage daughter. Joining the cast of Season 2 are Max Martini, Kirk Acevedo, and Patricia de Leon.
