With Mareeba Shire Council receiving another $200,000 in grant money, after the $150,000 they said they had back in May 2022 'disappeared', we are documenting the current poor state of these garden beds so we can see EXACTLY what they do with this money.
'Fish' ferns are what you plant in your gardens when you don't want to maintain them and although very 'green' and lush, they soon take over ANY garden bed their put in unless they are regularly maintained - which, as you can tell, they aren't and never have been.
This short video highlights one of the MAJOR reasons why the garden beds in Kuranda look the way they do - because a minority of the minority breaks or destroys the plants in them and literally 'pull out' any new plants that do happen to get planted.
It's going to be interesting to see how the Council 'deal' with this issue when they eventually start to 'replant' all of these beds as they have NEVER been willing or able to do anything about it before...
It's very difficult, if not impossible, to keep our gardens looking the way they need to when you have a particular group of people going out of their way so they don't and you have virtually NO Police presence in Kuranda to stop them.
A Deed of Agreement with Queensland Government is being developed. Works to commence once the agreement is signed.
