Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida at about 8:30 p.m. ET Wednesday night, according to the National Hurricane Center, arriving after officials repeatedly sounded the alarm on the dire threat the powerful storm poses to those in its path.

The storm, which made landfall about 70 miles south of Tampa, presents an "extremely life-threatening situation" to those on the state's western coast the Center has repeatedly warned.

Milton was downgraded earlier Wednesday evening to a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds near 120 mph. The storm had been a Category 4 storm for most of the day after it briefly regained Category 5 strength on Tuesday.
