"There is an art to this you may not realize." Sony Pictures & Apple Original Films have launched a second trailer for Wolfs, a New York City action comedy already playing in theaters now. Wolfs is the latest movie from director Jon Watts, who decided to take a break from Spider-Man after making three MCU movies before: Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home. The film follows two lone wolf fixers who are assigned to the same job. George Clooney and Brad Pitt (reteaming again after the Ocean's movies), two "lone wolves", are forced to work together, they find their night spiraling out of control in ways that neither one of them expected. The ensemble cast includes Austin Abrams (as the kid in the trunk), Amy Ryan, Irina Dubova, Poorna Jagannathan, with Zlatko Burić. And with NYC cinematography by Larkin Seiple. The film recently premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival to mixed reviews. It was supposed to play in theaters first but instead is streaming directly on Apple TV+ at the end of this week to view at home.

Global superstars George Clooney and Brad Pitt team up for the action comedy Wolfs, from Spider-Man director Jon Watts. Clooney plays a professional fixer hired to cover up a high profile crime. But when a second fixer (Pitt) shows up and these two "lone wolves" are forced to work together, they find their night spiraling out of control in ways that neither one of them expected. Wolfs is both written and directed by American filmmaker Jon Watts, director of the films Clown, Cop Car, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far from Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home previously, plus many other short films and music videos, and a few episodes of "The Old Man" TV series. Wolfs is a 2024 American action comedy film written and directed by Jon Watts. The film stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams, and Poorna Jagannathan. Its plot follows two professional fixers who are forced to work together on a job despite their preference to operate as lone wolves.[2][3]

Wolfs premiered out of competition at the Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2024, and was released on Apple TV+ on September 27. The film received mixed reviews from critics.

Plot
Margaret, a Manhattan District Attorney, panics after a young man in her hotel room, who she met at the hotel bar, ends up dead. She calls a number given to her for just such an emergency and secures the services of an unnamed professional fixer. He arrives to dispose of the kid who fell through a glass drinks cart while jumping on the bed. They are interrupted by another unnamed fixer sent by the hotel's mysterious owner, Pam, who saw everything via hidden cameras. To protect the hotel's reputation and Margaret's career, the women urge the two men to work together, much to their chagrin.

The fixers initially refuse, but Margaret reminds her man that he is now on the surveillance footage, and what she was told about him: "You take a job, you give your word, and that word is the measure of a man". The fixers reluctantly join forces, providing Margaret with an alibi and change of clothes and sending her home. They find a large stash of drugs in the kid's bag, which Pam orders them to return to its original owners to avoid further trouble. Margaret's man deftly moves the body to his car using a luggage cart, and the fixers discover the Kid is still alive but overdosing on the drugs.

Knocking the Kid out and stowing him in the trunk, the fixers suspect the drugs belong to a shipment recently stolen from the Albanian mafia. They bring the Kid to June, an underground medical specialist who has history with them both, but the underwear-clad Kid escapes and leads them on a chase through the city. Catching him and sobering him up with pills from June, the fixers interrogate the Kid at a dingy hotel. He explains that he agreed to deliver the drugs as a favor to his friend Diego, but was invited up to Margaret's room and tried the drugs on a whim. The delivery location will be sent to Diego's pager, which is at a club for the Kid to collect.

At the club, the Kid grabs the pager while the fixers get caught up in a wedding kolo and are recognized by Dimitri, a dangerous Croatian mobster. They save themselves by convincing him that they are not working together and depart, but his bodyguard realizes the truth. At a diner, the fixers deduce that drug kingpin Lagrange, Diego's employer, likely stole the Albanians' shipment and the Kid is being set up. Though the fixers expect the Kid will be killed, they agree to let him make the delivery, and the pager is sent the address for the drop.

The fixers watch as the Kid enters Lagrange's warehouse, which is soon ambushed by the Albanians. The two fixers are then ambushed by Dimitri's bodyguards, but shoot their attackers dead and make their way inside, where Lagrange's men and the Albanians have killed each other. The Kid has survived, hiding inside a car trunk, and the fixers prepare to kill him to hide their involvement in the fiasco, but have a change of heart at the last second. Accompanying the Kid home on the subway, they threaten his father to keep quiet about the entire incident.

Having breakfast at a diner in Brighton Beach, the fixers have clearly bonded over their many unspoken things in common, from their clothes and guns to their bad backs and reading glasses, but cannot bring themselves to admit it. Margaret's man asks how Pam convinced the other fixer to work with him, and he says that he was told, "You take a job, you give your word, and that word is the measure of a man". Realizing they are employed by the same person, they unravel the night's events and conclude that their employer orchestrated everything, and they were meant to be eliminated. With hitmen waiting outside, the fixers agree to exchange names if they make it out alive, and open fire.

In September 2021, a studio bidding war began for a film package that included Jon Watts as writer and director, with George Clooney and Brad Pitt on board to star and produce via their respective production labels, Smokehouse Pictures and Plan B Entertainment.[5] Wolfs reunites the two actors, who previously worked on the Ocean's trilogy (2001–2007) and appeared in one scene together in Burn After Reading (2008).[2][6] Apple TV+ acquired the rights to the film after winning the bidding war against Amazon MGM Studios, Annapurna Pictures, Lionsgate, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Netflix, Sony Pictures (which would briefly take over theatrical distribution rights before it was pivoted to limited), Universal Pictures, and Warner Bros. Pictures.[7] Additional cast members were revealed in 2023.[8][9][10] Principal photography reportedly began in January 2023 in New York City, including the neighborhoods of Harlem and Chinatown.[11][12] Larkin Seiple, who previously shot Watts' Cop Car (2015), was the cinematographer of the approximately 70-day shoot.[13]

In August 2024, The New York Times reported that Apple paid Clooney and Pitt more than $35 million to star and Watts more than $15 million to direct the film.[1] Clooney denied this claim, stating, "It is millions and millions and millions of dollars less than what was reported. And I am only saying that because I think it's bad for our industry if that's what people think is the standard bearer for salaries."[14]

Release
Wolfs had a limited theatrical release in the United States on September 20, 2024, before debuting on Apple TV+ on September 27.[15] It was originally set for a wide release since Apple acquired it in 2021, Clooney and Pitt having "made the deal to do that movie where we gave money back to make sure that we had a theatrical release."[16] In December 2023, Apple entered another agreement with Sony Pictures Releasing, following their partnership on Napoleon, to distribute the film in cinemas, scheduling it for release in the United States on September 20, 2024.[17][18]

In August 2024, six weeks before its release, Apple announced its decision to pivot from a wide release to a limited release on the same date.[15][1] The New York Times noted that Sony, who had agreed to distribute the film and split the marketing costs with Apple, was set to begin a national marketing campaign during the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, Zack Van Amburg, who oversees Apple's entertainment programming, canceled those plans and the deal with Sony, as Apple executives hoped "to not risk a public disappointment should the movie not succeed at the box office".[1] Clooney said he and Pitt put some of their salary into keeping the limited release, now handled solely by Apple.[19]

The film premiered out of competition at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2024. Watts skipped the event due to contracting COVID-19.[20]

Reception
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 68% of 167 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.9/10. The website's consensus reads: "George Clooney and Brad Pitt's professional star power gives Wolfs zip even when it cycles through clichés of the fixer genre, making for a pleasing and slick throwback."[21] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 60 out of 100, based on 51 critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews.[22]

Future
A month prior to its release, Apple confirmed a sequel was in the works, with Watts, Clooney, and Pitt returning.[15] Of the announcement, Watts said, "Apple's been talking to me about a sequel since I turned in my cut in December [2023]. That's always been an ongoing discussion. I absolutely did not write the movie with a sequel in mind. But it was very fun to make, so I don't know, I think you let the audience decide if they want to see more."[6]

While the entire production budget has not been reported, Clooney and Pitt were each reportedly paid $35 million for their involvement in the film, while director Watts earned $15 million.[1]

Brad Pitt and George Clooney are two lone-wolf fixers who are forced to work together after they’re tasked with the same assignment in Jon Watts‘ upcoming action comedy “Wolfs,” in theaters Sept. 20 via Sony.

As Clooney puts on gloves to cover up what looks like a grisly murder, he assures a woman, “There’s nobody who can do who I do.” Seconds later, Pitt walks in wearing a similar outfit, already gloved.

In addition to Pitt and Clooney, the cast also includes Austin Abrams, Amy Ryan and Poorna Jagannathan.

Pitt and Clooney also serve as producers on the film for their respective Plan B Productions and Smokehouse Pictures banners. Apple is the third studio, having won a bidding war against Sony, Lionsgate and Netflix for the movie package. Sony Pictures Releasing is distributing the film.

“Wolfs” marks a reunion for Pitt and Clooney, who starred together in three “Ocean’s” movies and last shared the screen in 2008’s “Burn After Reading.” As an actor, Pitt most recently appeared in Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” while Clooney recently reprised his role of Bruce Wayne in DC’s “The Flash.” Abrams is known for his roles in coming-of-age projects like “Euphoria,” “Dash and Lily,” “Do Revenge” and “Chemical Hearts.” Ryan has had an extensive career on stage and screen, known for her roles in “Gone Baby Gone,” “The Office,” “Beautiful Boy” and many other projects. Jagannathan is known for her matriarchal role in Mindy Kaling’s Netflix coming-of-age series “Never Have I Ever” and also appeared in the HBO miniseries “The Night Of,” among other titles.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt's long-awaited on-screen reunion is almost here.

The actors are joining forces to star in their first film together in 16 years: "Wolfs," the trailer for which was released on Wednesday. Clooney, 63, and Pitt, 60, star in the new action comedy as two fixers hired for the same job.

In the footage, a woman (Amy Ryan) calls Clooney's professional fixer character for help disposing of a body. "There's nobody that can do what I do," he declares. But Pitt's character, another fixer, soon enters, leading to some awkward confusion as he says he was sent to deal with the same problem.

The two fixers, both lone wolves, are then forced to work together — and things get complicated as the man whose body they were disposing turns out to be alive, and a bag full of drugs is discovered.

Ahead of the trailer, Apple TV+ released a 30-second teaser showing the duo in a tense, silent car ride with only the windshield wiper making noise.

Clooney and Pitt have not been co-stars in a film since 2008's "Burn After Reading." Before that, the two real-life buddies famously starred together in the "Ocean's Eleven" film trilogy.

Technically, Clooney and Pitt's reunion already happened this month in John Krasinski's "If," though it wasn't exactly the proper on-screen pairing fans have been waiting for.

As a gag, Pitt was credited in the film as an invisible character who never speaks, while Clooney had an actual role as the voice of an imaginary friend.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight in December, Clooney sarcastically quipped he's working with "pretty boy" Pitt again because "he needed work, he's an up-and-comer." When asked if it felt like no time had passed since they last worked together, Clooney joked, "No, it feels like a lot of time has passed. Too much time."

"Wolfs" is directed by Jon Watts, marking the filmmaker's first movie in almost a decade that isn't part of the "Spider-Man" franchise. Watts helmed all three Tom Holland-led "Spider-Man" films, most recently 2021's "No Way Home." Before that, he was known for directing the Kevin Bacon thriller "Cop Car."

In an interview with Deadline last year, Clooney revealed there are already talks about a sequel to "Wolfs."

"It was a great shoot and Jon is an extraordinarily talented guy who's also really joyful," he said. "He loves what he does. We had a blast doing it and we've seen it. It's an off the charts great film and it's fun to work with Brad again. We had a really good time."
Coming into 2024, “Wolfs” was one of everyone’s most anticipated films of the year. That’s what happens when you have Brad Pitt and George Clooney starring in the film. And now, we’re finally getting close to the release.

As seen in the trailer, “Wolfs” stars Pitt and Clooney as two fixers who are hired for the same high profile crime. They bicker quite a bit, as they are both used to working alone. However, when they stumble onto something much bigger, suddenly they have to work together to survive. The film is directed by Jon Watts, who is probably best known for directing the most recent trio of “Spider-Man” films.

It was recently revealed that “Wolfs” would be getting only a week-long run in theaters. Typically, this would be seen as a studio trying to save face instead of releasing a bad film worldwide. That said, the news of the short theatrical release came just as it was also revealed that Apple TV+ was starting development on a “Wolfs” sequel. So, it’s a fairly confusing situation.

“Wolfs” arrives in theaters on September 20 before arriving on Apple TV+ on September 27. You can watch the trailer below.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt reunite for the action comedy WOLFS. Clooney plays a professional fixer hired to cover up a high profile crime. But when a second fixer (Pitt) shows up and the two “lone wolves” are forced to work together, they find their night spiraling out of control in ways that neither one of them expected.
