A new TV spot offers a sneak peek at Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana 2, — including a new song from the sequel, “We’re Back.” Disney also debuted a new payoff poster for the film, which opens in theaters on November 27.
The epic animated musical adventure reunites Moana (Auli‘i Cravalho) and Maui (Dwayne Johnson) for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced. A new poster is also available.
The voice cast also features returning stars Rachel House (Gramma Tala), Temuera Morrison (Chief Tui) and Nicole Scherzinger (Sina), as well as Hualālai Chung, David Fane and Rose Matafeo as Moana’s new crew members Moni, Kele and Loto, respectively. Awhimai Fraser voices mysterious new character Matangi; Gerald Ramsey plays Moana’s ancestor, Tautai Vasa; and Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda lends her voice to Moana’s adoring and adorable little sister, Simea.
Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, Moana 2 features music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa‘i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina. Jared Bush and Miller are writing the film, which is executive produced by Jennifer Lee, Bush and Johnson.

Dwayne Johnson — the voice of Maui, the tattooed demigod with the big personality in Disney Animation‘s “Moana” films — took the stage to a standing ovation at Disney’s D23 to introduce “Moana and Maui’s most exciting adventure yet” and the new “Moana 2” trailer as part of the legendary animation studio’s lineup.
Set three years after the events in the 2016 Oscar-nominated original movie, “Moana 2” finds Moana and her crew in search of the lost island of Motufetu, which once connected the ocean, now hidden by a jealous God of Storms.
Johnson emphasized the idea of “believing that there is more, and having the guts to go for more … I know what it means for me, being a man of Polynesian culture, I’m half Black and half Samoan, and I know what this means for Auli’I (Cravalho, the voice of Moana) too.”

The trailer sees Moana stepping into her big sister role, guiding her 3-year-old sister Simea. Earlier in the presentation, Cravalho said Simea is Moana’s “whole world.”
As leader of the land and sea, she searches nearby islands for evidence of other people and faces a new, unknown enemy shrouded in purple light and surrounded by bats in the trailer. “You will be destroyed, and your way finder too,” the villain tells Moana and Maui.
The Kakamora coconut tribe also makes an appearance in the trailer, shooting blow darts at Moana.
The “Moana 2” presentation began with Cravalho singing “We’re Back,” a new original song for “Moana 2,” which opens Nov. 27, while joined on stage by dancers and drummers from Nonosina Polynesia under the direction of Tiana Liufau, who contributed animation reference choreography to “Moana” and the new film. Grammy-winning songwriters Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, as well as Pacific legend Opeatia Foa‘i and composer Mark Mancina, who both are returning, are the songwriting team on the film.
In this film, directors David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller (who also shares writing credit alongside Jared Bush) take the reins from “Moana” helmers John Musker and Ron Clements.
Rounding out the voice cast are Temuera Morrison as Tui, Nicole Scherzinger as his Sina, Rose Matafeo as Loto, David Fane as Kele, Hualālai Chung as Moni, and Alan Tudyk as Heihei.
“Moana” became a success for Disney, generating more than $680 million at the box office. The animated musical found renewed life on Disney+ with 1 billion hours streamed last year. The film also garnered two Oscar nominations for animated feature and original song for “How Far I’ll Go.”
“Moana 2” is separate from the studio’s live-action remake, which is currently in the works with Dwayne Johnson back as Maui.

Moana 2 (also known as Vaiana 2[3] or Oceania 2[4] in some markets) is an upcoming American animated adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. The sequel to Moana (2016), the film was directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller (in their feature directorial debuts) and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, from a screenplay by Jared Bush and Miller.[1][2] The film stars Auliʻi Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Rachel House, and Alan Tudyk, all reprising their roles from the first film, with Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, Rose Matafeo, David Fane, Hualālai Chung, Awhimai Fraser, and Gerald Ramsey joining the cast.
As Hollywood scrambled to generate revenue due to the theater closures caused by the COVID-19 lockdowns, development on Moana 2 began as a long-form limited streaming series for Disney+,[5] before being reworked into a theatrical sequel by February 2024, with Derrick confirmed as both writer and director. The involvement of Hand, Miller, Chen, and Merino was confirmed in May; a month later, Bush was confirmed to be returning as a writer. Miller later replaced Derrick as a co-writer in August. Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa'i, the composers and co-songwriters of the first film, returned to score and write the songs, while Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear replace Lin-Manuel Miranda as additional songwriters.
Moana 2 is scheduled to be released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in the United States on November 27, 2024.

Production
Development
In December 2020, during a Disney Investor Day meeting, Walt Disney Animation Studios chief creative officer Jennifer Lee announced that a long-form musical comedy series titled Moana: The Series, based on the 2016 film of the same name, was in development at the studio and set for release on Disney+ in 2023.[5][12] By August 2021, it was reported that Osnat Shurer would once again serve as producer.[13] In January 2022, it was announced that David Derrick Jr. would serve as the writer and director, after filling the role of storyboard artist of the first film.[14][15][16] The series entered development simultaneously with the live action remake of Moana according to Jared Bush, a writer of the film and screenplay writer of the 2016 animated film.[17]
In February 2024, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the series had been reworked into a theatrical sequel titled Moana 2, with Derrick and Shurer remaining attached to the project.[18] By the release of the first trailer in May, Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller were confirmed as co-directors alongside Derrick, while Christina Chen and Yvett Merino were revealed to replace Shurer as the film's producers.[1]
Casting
Shortly after the announcement that the series was being repurposed into a theatrical feature film, Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson were confirmed to reprise their respective roles as Moana and Maui.[7][8][9][10] Johnson later confirmed that he had been involved with the project since its conception, including its development, stating: "I can't wait for fans to see the film, the technology, the effects, cutting edge. We all really went for it. We thought if we're gonna make a sequel to something so beloved, let's really go for it."[9] Several more cast members were unveiled at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, including Temuera Morrison and Nicole Scherzinger reprising their roles as Moana's parents from the first film. New additions include Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda as Moana's new sister, and Rose Matafeo, David Fane, and Hualālai Chung as members of Moana's wayfinding crew.[6]
Animation
Animation was handled at Walt Disney Animation Studios' Vancouver studio beginning when it was being developed as a series, while pre-production and storyboarding took place at the Burbank studio.[13] It is the first feature film to be made at the Vancouver studio,[13][19] but not the first project released, with Iwájú being released earlier that year. At the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, it was revealed that veterans Mark Henn and Eric Goldberg would supervise a team of apprentices of hand-drawn animators for Maui's tattoos. Goldberg was a supervising animator for "Mini Maui" for the first film.[6]
Music
Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foaʻi return to compose the film score, while Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear wrote the songs, replacing Lin-Manuel Miranda from the first film.[20][21] Cravalho stated that having Barlow and Bear, two young women, help voice Moana's "story, which is a young woman finding her way, I couldn't think of a better duo than Barlow and Bear. ... This is a new part of my voice. ... This film digs into these low notes in these times of indecision when we don't know what we are supposed to do next. There's a lot of deeper layers to these songs."[20]

Marketing
The first trailer for the film was released on May 29, 2024 after debuting at CinemaCon the month before.[1][23] A sneak peek at the film was screened at the 2024 Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 14, 2024.[24] The trailer earned over 178 million views in its first 24 hours across all platforms, breaking a new record as the most watched trailer of all time for a Disney animated film, a record previously held by Frozen II and Pixar's Inside Out 2 (the latter of which the trailer was attached to in the theaters).[25]
On August 9, 2024, Cravalho and Johnson appeared at the Disney Entertainment Showcase at the 2024 D23 Expo in Anaheim, California to promote the film and release a new trailer, which was released online shortly thereafter.[26] During the D23 presentation, Cravalho performed a new song from the film, "We're Back," accompanied by Polynesian dancers.[26] Johnson also used the presentation to announce a new live-action Monster Jam film that he would be producing with Disney.[27]
Localization
Like the first movie, Moana 2 is set to be released in European countries[28][29][30] with the title and protagonist's name changed to Vaiana due to a trademark conflict.[31]
A special dubbing in Hawaiian is set to be released for the sequel, like one was for the first movie in 2018,[32] with Auliʻi Cravalho reprising again her role as Moana.[33]

Debuting at the D23 Expo in Anaheim on Friday night, the footage dives deeper into the mysterious call from her ancestors Moana received in the first teaser trailer back in May. You can watch the footage in the video below.
Both Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson return to voice Moana and Maui respectively, with the sequel taking place three years after the events of the original film. And they were both on hand to debut the clip. Cravalho came out singing the new song from the film, “We’re Back” to uproarious applause from the Disney fanatics on hand.
Johnson followed her out onstage, dancing awkwardly to tribal drums, before delivering an enthusiastic hype-up.
“In Polynesian culture, we have a phrase that we say — it elicits energy, motivation. And we’re going to get all 12,000+ of you to say it here tonight. Are you ready? Let me get a cheeehoooo,” he said.
“That was amazing but that’s not good enough. This is the largest crowd D23 has ever had in the history of Disney. We’re going to do it one more time — can I get a chee-hooo?” he asked again to the crowd.
The Cravalho explained, “when we meet Moana again she has become the leader of the land and sea but more excitingly, she’s a big sister. Her sister is her whole world. When she’s not in big sis mode, she spends her time searching near by islands for evidence that there are more people.”
Johnson then interjected, “Maui is singing again. Singing in keys that don’t exist. My hair looks fantastic in Moana 2,” he joked. “This will be Maui and Moana’s most exciting journey yet.”

“Just personally, I know what it means for me as a man of Polynesian descent. I know what this means for Auli’i too. I want to take a moment — this idea of a young girl who is empowered and who feels like there is. more to life than what’s in front of her. This is really important for ‘Moana 2.’ Whether you’re a little girl or a little boy, all of us in this room, this idea of believing that there is more.,” Johnson continued, nodding to his 8 year old and 6 year old daughters, Jasmine and Tiana.
“If Te-ka was bad, wait until you see the villains we have in this one. It is the storm of all storms,” Johnson added.
According to Disney’s official synopsis, “After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
The animated sequel will once again contain brand new original songs, but Lin-Manuel Miranda isn’t returning to handle the soundtrack as he did for “Moana.” Instead, Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear are handling the music.
Only one song has been revealed so far, and it’s called “We’re Back.” Fans got a first look at it as part of the footage shown at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival earlier this summer.
“Moana 2” is set to hit theaters on Nov. 27, 2024.
