Sonya Massey was shot in the face by Deputy Sean Patrick Grayson II just two minutes and thirty seconds after she allowed Grayson to enter her home, and the shooting may have been precipitated by a misunderstanding by Grayson of Massey’ s second utterance of the words, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus,” which ended midway by Grayson’s aggressive response. It appears that Massey may have uttered these words over suspicions that the police were taking advantage of their welcome into her home. After Grayson points his gun at Massey, he begins to order Massey five times to drop a pot of boiling water that she was not initially holding at the time.
The following are Massey’s responses to Grayson’s repeated orders to, “Drop the [expletive] pot!”
1. Massey complies with first order by taking her hands off pot and ducking to floor to protect herself from anticipated gunshot.
2. Massey, while kneeling on kitchen floor, complies with second order by saying, “Okay” and grabs pot on kitchen countertop and drops boiling water from pot onto floor.
