Jelly Roll Morton (born Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe, 1890–1941) was an influential American pianist, composer, and bandleader, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of jazz music. Born in New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz, Morton was a key figure in shaping the early development of the genre. He was a master of ragtime, blues, and stride piano, and his unique style combined these elements to create what he called the "first real jazz." His compositions often featured syncopated rhythms, complex harmonies, and improvisational flair, blending classical influences with the vibrant African-American musical traditions of the time.
