A 23-year-old Taiwanese university student, identified only by his last name Zhang, was convinced by his friend Liao to participate in an extreme insurance scam. Liao, who had suffered losses from cryptocurrency trading, tricked Zhang into signing a legal note obligating him to pay a large sum of money. To carry out the fraud, Zhang purchased several expensive insurance policies and then intentionally inflicted severe frostbite on his feet by soaking them in dry ice for over 10 hours, resulting in the amputation of both legs. However, medical staff became suspicious of the inconsistencies in Zhang's injuries and alerted authorities. Both Zhang and Liao were arrested and are facing charges of fraud and aiding and abetting serious injury.
