Suspect fatally shoots himself after shooting at Alaska State Troopers during high speed chase

Alaska State Troopers have released the dashcam footage from a deadly shooting that started with a police chase between troopers and a driver connected to a felony investigation late last year.

According to the report, at 1:11 p.m. on Nov. 1, 2023, troopers attempted to stop a pick-up truck on the Parks Highway just north of Healy.

The pick-up truck — being driven by 45-year-old Michael Grimes of Fairbanks — failed to stop for the marked trooper vehicles, triggering a pursuit heading northbound towards Fairbanks.

During the pursuit, the Grimes shot a firearm multiple times at troopers pursuing the vehicle.

The Alaska State Troopers said that “due to the extreme public safety risk that the driver posed to the public, Troopers and other law enforcement officers assisting with the pursuit returned fire.”

Grimes reached up to speeds of around 110 mph. Troopers had to use several tactics to stop the vehicle, including spike strips and a pursuit intervention technique (PIT).

After coming to a stop near mile 257, the officer and Grimes continued exchanging gunfire, during which time Grimes was shot and killed.

Troopers later confirmed that Grimes was connected to an active felony-level investigation.

A passenger riding with Grimes, 42-year-old Melody Perry of North Pole, was arrested and charged with third-degree misconduct involving a weapon and jailed at Fairbanks Correctional Center. Perry was unharmed, according to the incident report. According to court records, she was released on bail and is awaiting a trial date.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

On Aug. 2, 2024, the Alaska Office of Special Prosecution completed their review of the criminal investigation, and determined that the lethal use of force was allowed under Alaska law.
