Took the skiff down to Miami to search for giant tarpon filling up on the chicken of the sea. That's shrimp if you didn't know... We had some live crabs in the well just in case, but it turns out throwing around the zman mulletron was the key to finding more bites. We could cover water more easily and hooking up on the mulletron was great! The line thru construction allowed the bait to slide up on the line and kept the fish pinned for the most part. It's tarpon fishing, so the odds are always against you. But we did manage to get some to the boat. I was also trying out some new fishing rods. I purchased a few Shimano Teramar rods in 8 foot Extra Heavy. I feel as though if I went with the double extra heavy, I wouldn't have been able to sling out the baits that well. The rods handled the fish just fine, and was able to get them to the boat and released in under 30 minutes. I think that is the golden number for catching big tarpon. I paired up the rods with Daiwa Saltist 6000 reels, 40 pound daiwa J braid, and 80 pound leaders. The combo's worked perfectly, and I can't wait to get back out there!
